1991 164 speaker sizes

Anyone know off-hand what the size the front speakers are? The rears appear to be 6 x 9s.

These 19-year-old speakers ain't cutting it.

On my 1990 car the fronts are 5.25" round ones and the rears are an odd size which is ,I think, 5"x7". They are definitely not 6"x9". I replaced the fronts because that size is not too hard to get. I am trying to decide what to do with the rears because I can get some in the correct size but I think they are a bit small. I notice that there are round holes in the panel next to them which would take 6.5" rounds, but the trim on top is not cut out. I wonder if the factory had an option for the larger round speakers. I am thinking of cutting them cut out and fitting 6.5"s. My main concern is whether it might look untidy.

Thanks for the info. You saved me a PITA return-to-store purchase scenario.

At this point, due the age of these cars, I would think that a second set of speakers inside of the originals would not look untidy if properly fitted. There is quite a bit of blank space at rear, why not use it?

As I stated in my original post, I seemed to recall that the rears were 6x9 on my 93.

It is by no means unlikely that AR produced differing setups for the AUS and US markets.

My goal here is to get the sizes so I only need to disassemble 19-year-old interior parts once to replace the 19-year-old speakers.

The rear speakers on all us model 164's are 6X9 in the rear deck and 5-1/4 to 6-1/2 in the front doors. I think the 91 to 93 cars have the 5-1/4 and the 94 to 95 cars have the 6-1/2 in the doors but not 100% about that.

I think we need to get all the info together and inform all the companies that list speaker sizes for cars.

I have come across companies saying that the front door speakers are 4 inch, 5.5 inch, 6.5 inch speakers and that the rear speakers are 5.5 inch, and that the radio is a single DIN size when my factory radio is a DIN and 1/2.

What would be a good upgrade from the stock speakers in the rear? Polk? Memphis? Boston Acoustics? Kenwood? Or is this a subjective item to the listeners ear? I can't spend more than $90-$100/a pair for the rears. maybe just find some good used one from a wrecked 164.

I noticed mine have broken off connectors. I wonder if the judges dinged me on my trunk for broken speaker connectors hanging down?

I just put in some new Infinity in the front (6-1/2s two way), in the rear (6X9s three way), and added a set of Infinity Tweeters on the mirror covers/side window defroster vent. They sound great! Oh they are hooked up to an 400 watt Alpine four channel amp along with a 1200 watt Sound stream two channel bridged to the Alpine Type R DVC 12's.

My 91 164L uses 6 1/2 inch speakers in the front and 6X9's in the rear.

I recently swapped out the factory cassette deck with a JVC HD radio, I replaced the front speakers with some Pioneer Premier 6 1/2" 3 way speakers and the rears with Kicker 6X9" 3 way speakers and now I am really happy with my stereo system in my Alfa. It's not as great as an amplified system with a subwoofer but just changing out the radio and speakers made such an improvement that I don't think I'll need to change anything else for quite some time!

Update....I now have my entire sound system all done in my Alfa Romeo. I still have the same 6 1/2 inch Pioneer's in the front and the Kicker 6x9's in the rear and the JVC HD radio, but I now have a Rockford Fosgate P2 12" subwoofer powered by a Rockford Fosgate P3001 amplifier and a 1 Farod Rockford Fosgate capacitor all mounted in the trunk with a kill switch mounted below the dash. And for anyone who might be cringing right now....the bass is turned down so now I just get clear mids lows and highs without the distortion you normally get when you try to get bass from 6 1/2" speakers. I'm not into that whole "rattle your car apart" bass!

Part of the confusion about speaker sizes on the 164 is caused by the fact that the industry sizes do not correspond to actual sizes. The size used by the US 164 in the front is the traditional 6-1/2 inch size. This speaker measures 158 mm, which is actually only 6.2 inches. An increasingly more common size is the European 165 mm size which measures a true 6-1/2 inches. Crutchfield refers to the 165 mm size as 6-3/4 inches to distinguish it from the traditional 6-1/2 inch size. Others try to obtain the same goal by calling the 158 mm size "6 inches".

Early, non-US bound 164s had 5-1/4 inch speakers in the front. If you look at pictures you can see the speaker holes on the doors are smaller than on US models. In the rear, they had really tiny oval speakers in covers over the seat belt take-up reels.

Should I be able to just buy any old 6x9 and pop it right in to replace the bad rear speaker in my LS?
