Eclipse SC8635 3way splits and pods for my 75...
iv always wanter to enter the world of the 3way, after my GTV's 2way active crossover setup [elsewhere on this forum], and a certian sale sucked me in to buying these puppies, way below half price and new[not ex demo]. thier still a current model and have been for quite awhile, and a very well built speaker, and sound great when set up right.
i never had a project in mind for them, i got them cheap, and if i never use them i could make a profit off ebay.
11months later, i had an operation and score 2 weeks off. so early this week i began my pods.
a real mision fitting huge speakers into a door with odd shapes, and no ideal access holes for the magnet.
im a Sound Quality person, then SPL after. so down in the stock location would be easyish, but i dont wanna cut a good trim, and i need the woofer ferther forwards, an up if i can.
the 75 door has a great insert for a pods begining, if only there were a access hole right behind it... so its ideal to shallow mount speakers...
hopefully ill get them done for Spettacollo, Nov.
anyway, pics....

more of the second pod,
and an idea of where the mid and tweeter will soon sit, in thier own little pods.
i think the pics are a good idea of how the pods are made [ther is more resin and glass layed inside each pod for strength]
the staples dont go right through, being 12mm long, into 3mm mdf, its neater and easier to pull them out if the only just hold in [after glassing the terry towel] ...
this is where im up to, tomorrow ill finish the glassin of the second one, and start sanding the outside, which ill cover in grey or black vynal, unless someone can tell me where to get the 3.0lt/verde fabric, id love a meter or two of that stuff!
oh, and itll be run passive crossovers this time...

at $6.50, this little glue gun is a audio builders best friend... makes things alot easier...
and this little 'vynal' knife [brother is a pasterer and he brought it home, and thats what he calls it] is awsome for the little odd jobs, like carving, chamfering the mdf, cleaning up the corners etc... doesnt replace the stanly knife but it does everything it cant, and makes some other jobs easier.

Looking good.
I have to ask though - Did you check clearances with the door closed? I think you may find you'll be unable to use the glovebox nor the fusebox whilst the doors are closed. My experience anyway when I built a similar pod but building up the whole trim.
Great to see it finished though.

rookie-
yeah i have checked clearances... no use of the glovebox without opening the door first... dunno about the fuse box, but it should clear, but i think the door would be open if i were there anyway.
not really bothered about my knee resting against it while driving, but ill see if it is annoying when i get them in as iv got a half hour drive to and from work everyday. if i did it again, or anyone else did, i recommend buying shallow mounts[about 2" deep and cant remember the name of the ones im thinking of].
always good fun doing this, even if it is annoying sometimes.

todays progress,
finished the second pod, just need to prep the two of them now.
anyone know where i can get the verde material? i doubt its even avalible anymore
started the pillar pods,
striped the vynal stuff off them. its the stuff they use for vacuum forming on the dashes, and it super strechy with a little bit of heat, so im ganna buy some and cover these in this stuff, or i may just take them into the dash reconditioners here and get them formed profesionally. ill see.
only glued one side up, as the mozzies came out, and having a shaved head doesnt make for much fun...

basicly finished preping the pillars. they just need to wiped down with a damp cloth, and high-fill primed with a very light rub. i hope to take them in to get covered with the vacuum stuff [at the dashboard reconditioners, $44AUS each one] in a couple weeks when the money starts to flow again [only had enough sick leave for 1week, not 2 ].

Tool Tangent:
Vinyl knife........ just what it's named for.
Used when one layer of vinyl flooring (AKA linolium) needs to butt up against another snugly, but there is overlap.
Use the hook to cut both pieces at once as they're overlapped and when it lays down you have an exactly matching edge with as tight a seam as can be generated
Also useful for doing the same to carpeting if you run into the same sort of situation, and the tool is good-n-sharp.

heres the finished door pods.
covered in 13mm medium density foam then black vynal, all hot glued down, and heat gunned for extra strechiness.
there're nice and soft to touch, and rest against [knee or elbow].
