Thumbs up Arosc Time Trial At Fontana

For those of you who attended the great AROSC school at The Streets of Willow this past weekend (Feb 5 & 6) can follow up the adrenalin rush at our upcoming Time Trial Weekend at the California Speedway in Fontana March 19 & 20. AROSC is returning to Parking Lot #14 for a repeat of a successfully held Time Trial Competition. This is the perfect venue for our graduates of Street Performance and Novice Time Trial to hone their skills and take a major step toward receiving their competition license. THERE WILL BE NO RACE GROUP and plenty of seat time (over 2.5 hours) during the weekend.
With assistance provided by SCCA, we will lay out an interesting 1 mile or slightly longer track with at least 1 passing straight.
There will be 3 Time Trial run groups. The 'Novice' Time Trial group (drivers without a AROSC approved competition license) must attend classroom sessions before each run session. Instructors will be available to hop in your car. Check it all out at www.arosc.org.

If you've never had a car on the track, AROSC offers an Intro Course for $20 per day that will provide you with class room instruction and nearly an hour of lead and follow around the track during lunchtime. Instructors will take relatively small groups of cars around the track increasing the lap time by 1/2 to 1 second per lap. After each lap the Instructor will wave off the car immediately behind so that every one will get a chance to drive the correct line as nearly as possible. Most any daily driver will qualify . Check out www.arosc.org for specifics.

Too bad no race group. Must be parking lot track policy? Short tracks make rookie racers like me feel comfortable at lower speeds. It is scary getting passed on Turn 9 at Big Willow by someone doing 140mph...

The entry fee will be $200 for Time Trials but Club Member get a $20 discount. Intro Group is $40 for the weekend, $20 for a single day. The flyer, which contains the entry form, should be posted at AROSC very soon now.

bending the rules

Bruce or Norm,

Since this event will be a low speed 3-4 gear max parking lot event (I assume that means cones like an autocross) do you think AROSC will bend the rules to allow unprepped streetcars with DOT safety systems long sleeve shirts/shoes/pants and a helmet to run this one event?

The modification required for Time Trial is a 5 or 6 point DOT approved harness. We can not wave this. Sh-t happens (as I can bear testament ) and safety comes first. Natural fiber clothes are OK.
It's pretty easy to set up a snap in system. In my Passat wagon I replaced the front and rear seat belt bolts with eye bolts for the front waist and rear shoulder harness (angle was within acceptable limits). Pull back the floor mat and drill a hole for the submarine (use a heated awl or nail set to melt a hole through the carpet fibers before drilling).
Fred Crow (Crow Enterprises in Fullerton) is pretty reasonable (well under $200) and will supply the hardware and, if necessary, custom size the belts. His sewing shop is on the premises.

Hope to see you there. A one mile course is a great equalizer for my 80bhp.

It's true, the track will be defined by cones, just as an autocross course is defined. And it's true, no one is likely to get hurt as a consequence of hitting cone at speed, even with "street" safety equipment. However, our event is still a Time Trial. The course will be more open than an autocross course so the speeds will be substantially higher. Also, there will be more cars on course at one time than in an autocross. The Time Trial Board did discuss all this but the decision was for "no change in safety requirements" for this event.

The track layout has not been finalized but I suspect it will be close to 1.5 miles.

The track should be just about as long as the Streets of Willow, but with no elevation changes and no banks.

Here are some frequently asked questions:

- Will it be in the Fontana race track infield or the parking lot?
A: it will be in the parking lot, outside the main track. The track
will be marked with cones.

- Is it a time trial or an autocross?
A: It's a time trial, run to our usual time trial practices and rules.

- Will there be a race?
A: No.

- How long is the track?
A: About one and a half miles.

- How fast is it? Is it fun?
A: Mostly 2nd and 3rd gear, short stretch of fourth gear. It's a blast,
lots of turns and a real workout for the driver. And with nothing to run
into you can really go for it and work on your driving skills.

- Will we need full safety equipment, including 5-point harness?
A: Yes. All usual AROSC safety rules apply. No exceptions.

To get an instructor to jump in the car in novice TT for some feedback I suppose it requires 5/6 point harness also on the passenger side, right? I suspect they would appreciate that

Good guessing Jes. Yes, an instructor in the passenger seat would need 5-point harnesses as well.

Are you guys planning on having a track map available prior to the event? Would probably be nice to get acquainted with the layout in advance - you could even mark the ideal line around the track (for an "average" car) - would be helpful for novice TTers.

Perhaps the temporary nature of the track prevents this?

More than likely we won't have a track map to hand out but maybe we can post a drawing somewhere for everyone to look at.

Your question about "the ... line" is a good one for Novice Time Trial class but try to keep in mind that the instructors may not have been out on the course before the Saturday AM class.
