I'm going to try and make it. It's been too long! I need to get another set of wheels redrilled and race tires before then.

Have you decided which tires to go with? Michelins?

Well the michelins cost $203 for 225/50/16. But I am told they last WAAAAY longer than Kumhos (I've read through forums.rennlist.com and other BMW forums). Something like 25 heat cycles (my understanding is 1 heat cycle = 1 day event). So in the long run they'll save you more money. And they grip better than the Toyo RA-1s ($164, another long lasting tire) too. Kind of a toss up right now.

I need at least 1 tire for January. So I may get just one Kumho to get me through Willow Springs in Jan and see how the finances work out.

One heat cycle would be one SESSION, not one day. Every time you bring the tire up to temp and then let it cool again.

In my size (225/45/17) the Michelins are $20 more than the Hoosiers. I may try the Pirelli PZero Corsa this year. They are supposed to be pretty durable and still fast. A little bit cheaper than the Kumhos too.

Do you really have issues with how long Kumhos last? They last way longer than the softer Hoosiers. Any race tire will flatspot down to the cords when you have a big lockup like you did at Laguna

So are you going to make it to WS?

Have you decided on tires? I'm deciding on either the Toyos or Kumhos for the rears...245/45/16 Fronts are still ok.

Unfortunately I probably won't make it to Willow in January. I'm flying back east to see my folks the same week.

I think I'm going to go ahead and try the Pirelli PZero Corsas this year, 225/45/17.

How are you going to make 245s fit in the rear? My 225s rub a little...

Hi inhistoryclass,

I'm in Vista, CA, see the right side of the title bar of my post, adjcent to the term "Location". (Sorry, just pulling your leg a bit...)

If you can send me your email address via private message, I will email you a fairly complete description. I'd post it here but I think it's too long. In summary, there are really three ways to get involved. The easiest is to come out to our next event at Willow Springs (Jan 8 & 9) and enter the Introductory Group (Intro Group). You'll get about 45 min of instruction each day, followed by about 45 min driving your car on the track (each day) in a leader-follower format. You'll need to register ($40 for 2 days, $20 for 1 day), get your car tech inspected (a safe street car is generally OK) and ware appropriate clothes (you'll need a helmet but you may be able to borrow one at the track). You'll learn about the racing line and how to drive on the track, then you'll get to try it while following an instructor. The speeds won't be excessive but, believe me, you'll go fast enough to get a feel for it and you'll have a blast!

The second approach, or second step if you've already done Intro Group, would be to attend our Driving School at the Streets of Willow (Feb 5 & 6). This will cost more but you'll get about 4 hours each of class room instruction, skid pad work and track time. You'll learn a lot more than you can in Intro Group and you'll come away with a much better understanding of your car and what it'll do. One thing here, if you have an open car, you'll need a roll bar in order to participate in the track sessions.

The third way is to prepare your car fully for time trials and enter an event. While we allow people to do this, I would recommend attending either an Intro Group session or Driving School first. If you do attempt this, there are required classroom sessions at the track plus there are instructors available to help you along. It is, however, a pretty abrupt way to get started.

Again, if you can get me an email address, I will send you a much more detailed description of the whole process.

Chip,

I was going to go to Dave Turner Motorsports this weekend to try out helmets. I goolged it, and it came up with a Dave Turner Motorsports in Hemet www.daveturner.com. Is that the same store (now relocated) that you went to? Any other suggestions for race shops in the LA-SD area?

I'll probably go to the one pointed to by Gifford instead then.

75Evo,

Just what I needed - just 15 min north of me. Amazing in a time where the web usually only makes anything virtually a click away.

Thanks for the pointer

Jes

The schedule for 2005 is starting to fill our. The registration for "The First Annual Charlie Thieriot Memorial Competition" is in the mail. Included in a weekend of remembrances, Saturday night dinner will feature a special tribute to Charlie and his (sometimes colorful) relationship with AROSC competition.

The balance of the schedule currently looks as follows:

Feb 5th & 6th School at the Streets of Willow. As usual school will be divided into Street Performanc, Novice and Advanced Time Trial and Race Group. During the 2 days count on a minimum of 4 hours each of Classroom, Wet & Dry Skid Pad and Track Sessions.

May 28th & 29th Buttonwillow Time Trial and Race (including Alfa Cup) Competition. We will decide whether or not to include and Enduro shortly.

Sep 3rd & 4th School at the Streets of Willow

Oct 22nd & 23 Willow Springs Raceway Time Trial and Race Weekend (indlucing Alfa Cup)

At the Competiton Board meeting tomorrow we will discuss the possible dates offered to us for a second Buttonwillow event, a go at the newly reconfigured 2.4 mile track in Parhump, and a possible Time Trail only on an extended Streets of Willow plus some other options. We would hope to get a date at Laguna Seca, but as of yet we have not been offered anything acceptable.

Hope to see many of you in January - great time for setting records. If the last few years is any example, temps should be in the mid to high sixties, no appreciable wind and, as usual in the high desert, not much chance of meaningful rain.

I know it's a long drive, but, Thunderhill might be fun in the Fall. I would think it would draw people from all up and down the coast.
