Alfas Coming to Convention

How many of the Alfas in these pictures will be coming to the Convention next month? Who owns the SS?

I know mine will be at least for a day... I'd love to go for longer but alas I must work, and since I'm so young I don't think my parents would be so keen on letting me and my girlfriend get a hotel room together

Gotta love the Triumph Spitfires. Front wheel tilted in, rear wheel tilted out. Ouch.

Reminds Me of my Swing Axle 1961 Corvair!

It also had a swing axle rear suspension. Everyone, (except the driver) expected the car to roll at any minute, because the outside wheel rim was about to dig into the pavement. Never did roll the car at an autocross (or any other time)! But was probably only a split second away from doing so. Of course, when you only paid $20 for the entire car, rolling it would not be of any major concern. (It had an automatic on a little stick protruding from the dash BTW)!

Whoops, don't know how I did it but I posted the photos in the wrong thread.
Go here for New Glarus 2009 photos...sorry

As far as a map of the route, it is simply held on Kubly Road in New Glarus, which you might be able to zoom in on on Mapquest.

Okay, you can see the course pretty well on Google Earth, though it is fully wooded. I put some markers there to indicate the start and finish. However, I am not sure that these are visible to any other users viewing it?? Again, go to New Glarus Wisconsin on Google Earth. Let me know if you can see the markers.

Hello Tom

Thanks for responding. No markers on my end but I did find Kubley Road and the wooded area it traverses. I'd like to see more info on the event but my search engine doesn’t bring up a website, Could you direct me ? I'll need to get up there next time but in the meantime I think a road trip is order, it looks to be a very nice community to pay a visit to this summer. One can never have enough cheese ! :-)

Regards
Dan

Hi Dan,

There is no website for the event. It is meant to be an invite-only type event for AROC-WI, VSCC members and invited guests. Of course it is open to spectators. It is in its 21st year of existence. This year had nearly 50 entries. The entry criteria is strict: All 4, straight 6 and straight 8 Alfas, Pre-WWII cars, and invited exemptions. An example of an invited exemption this past year was the FIA Champion Daytona Cobra Coupe brought by Dana Mecum, which is the feature car at his upcoming auction. The car had a low speed, un-timed exhibition run.

The course is approximately 7/10 of a mile with a consistent grade but for a saddle portion mid-way through the course. It is based on the model of traditional English hillclimbs. The event is also known as "Das Kurze Klausenrennen" which translates into "The Short Klausenrennen", after the famous Klausenrennen hillclimb of the 20's and 30's in the canton of Glarus, Switzerland. New Glarus is a settlement of Swiss from that region and the topography is remarkably similar to that area. However, there is no direct tie between this event and the re-creation that takes place in Switzerland.

The fastest time this year was posted by a Lancia Fulvia Zagato. Notable attendees included Peter Egan from Road and Track magazine.

This is not really a speed event, but more of a day to enjoy old cars in their element. It is a VINTAGE event... a chance for old friends to take to the roads again, hence modern cars are not allowed. New this year was a touring event, which takes place after the timed runs and is open to all makes, models and years of vehicles.

New Glarus is a wonderful town. The entry fees from the Hillclimb are donated to the youth sports program in the Village. The Swiss food at the Chalet Landhaus is one of the high points of my visit. Also, it is tradition for hillclimb virgins to gather at Puempels Tavern after the runs for local fresh made Limburger, Onion and Liverwurst Sandwiches (funky, nasty stuff) and local New Glarus beer.

Hopefully we will see some photos posted...
