How to search vechicle history with 7-digit vin

Hi,

My friend bought a Alfa Romeo GTV Bertone 1750, which was exported from the USA about 10-15 years ago. Registration / insurance papers have lost in these years, so we have only 7-digit vin number and Californian license plate for the car. Any ideas how we should proceed to get the car history in USA? Thanks!

stubbled across this

Jani,
I just happen to stubble across this post of yours from last year. I see no one responded. Maybe because the location doesn't get much "traffic" here.
Try posting again on the "Production Models Forum" area. Specifically the year & model of your Alfa, it might get a response. Central Documentation in Italy isn't available any longer under the same
guise so you may have to pay a fee. I'm not sure. Keep up the search!
Good luck,
Greg

Yes, but since a Alfa Romeo GTV Bertone 1750 is smog exempt, that report won't be of much use.

As far as I know, California doesn't release information on prior vehicle ownership. I don't know if they won't release this information for privacy reasons, or simply don't maintain a database of prior owners.

not quite Jay, my 74 GTV history is still there up until the exemption was passed into law-- I see smog test dates and results back into the 1990s. The link can be useful to trace older cars to California; but only to the extent the records are available. Admittedly its not perfect.

I do recall having to get smog inspections for my '67 Duetto during the late 80's/early 90's. However, I just entered its license plate # into the CARB website, and got back: "No tests were found for this vehicle".

I am assuming that Jesseri is looking for previous owners' names and addresses; if his car produced some hits against the CARB database, would the smog inspection reports include ownership information?

Sure. Anything you can get from the State of California in real time and for free is a miracle.

Hi Jesseri,

I ran a national VIN check using this link to confirm that my Canadian car had been originally imported into the US.

https://www.vehiclehistory.gov/

You will need to use one of the services listed that has access to the USDOT data so it costs a few bucks. I was able to find that my car had been titled in New York and Massachusetts. Having that information exempted me from an import tariff when I brought the car in.

My VIN only showed up in this system from about 1995 on, so it must not be fully digital yet.

If you find a record using that system, you may be able to go to the state system to see if there is additional history. Stolen or totaled car information can often be found at the state level with the short VIN.

Hope this helps!

Thanks,

Scott
