Driven Both....
I've driven both (on the track), and they are, ....well.......different. Both good! I recently drove Mike Getzhoff's '73 (stock) Carrera at Willow Springs, and it was great fun. It was very responsive, and it went right where I pointed it. I have raced dozens of different Alfas, and my race car is a '74 GTV. I love Alfas, but I do enjoy the power that a Porsche provides. Alfas are certainly more comfortable to drive at speed. I really don't think you can compare them that easily.
I have also raced a rather over-done rat-trap of a 930 with a huge turbo, which WAS a different animal.
Bruce Colby is right, you should come out to one of our events and see the different Alfas, and go for a few rides. Someone (maybe even me) might swap cars w/ you for a session. Where do you live?
Alfas, to me, are feminine while Porsches seem more masculine. At least as far as driving impression. Even the pedal-feel, power and driveability. There is a place for both, and both can be very fast, if well set-up.

Worried about the rear? That's not something to worry about. After driving a GTV, you'll ask yourself "how the devil do they do that with a live rear axle?"
By the way, how much are you asking for this 911s? Does it have the orginal 2.7 motor???

It is a 1969 911S (with matching number motor and trans) which came with a 2.0L with mechanical fuel injection. The car is stripped down to a shell and on a rolling dolly. It needs to be dipped or media blasted down to bare metal and have the rust repaired. The motor is completely rebuilt with 0 miles on it at a cost of $8800. The trans is completely rebuilt with 0 miles on it at a cost of $1200. I have many other parts that are restored and ready to go, this is just turning into way too big of a project for me. I have $18k into the car as it sits and I am getting offers right now in the $10k range which I will probably end up taking. The car needs another $15-20k put into it to have it restored to the level the 911S deserves to be restored to. When finished, the car will be worth a solid $30k. The next owner should probably end up being into the car for what it's worth, which is rare when you restore a car.

Delicious!!! I will own a 911s one day. Your letting it go for a good price. "if" I had the money, I'd probably be all over it.
Was that motor rebuilt to stock specs? How many ponies does a stock 2liter S motor pump?
Me want, me want, me want!!!

that is a good price for the 911. like sniady, i happen to love those cars. one day, i too will own one, just not now.
as well as the arosc event you should go to california speedway next weekend. there will be a 2.5 challenge race with lots of gtv's, hopefully a couple gta's, and two giulia sedans.
gta's have gone up in price lately. i remember a few years back picking race ready gta's for the low to mid $30K range. today, those prices will get you a good restoration project.
how much are you looking to spend? you can get a race ready gtv for half the price of a gta and if you drive it right, you WILL blow the doors of some gta's.

The motor was rebuilt to completely stock specs. I had locks put in for the chain tensioners so if they fail they will not damage the motor. The chain tensioners were the early 911 motors achilles heel. They normally failed at about 100k miles. That still wasn't bad for 1969. I had a couple of other reliabilty and durability upgrades done but nothing that appeared different than period correct. Here's a couple of pictures of the cars I am keeping.

My track car now is the orange car. The black one is just a fun street car now. To answer your question from above. The 1969 2.0L S motor is 170hp but that is a DIN (German) rating. In SAE hp its about 190.
My track car has a 2.9L motor in it that dyno'd at 238 at the rear wheels and weighs just over 2100 lbs. It is way more car than I know what to do with yet. The black car was way easier to track because it didn't have enough hp to really get me in too much trouble. This one, well it's still in one piece... so far

racea911,
Welcome to the AlfaBB and I must say those are very nice 911's you have. Like you I am a 911 owner in search of a track worthy Alfa Romeo. The Alfa virus is very strong! I think it’s easy to fall in love with the assortment of GTV's and their different flavors and engine sizes (like 911's). This seems to be the car of choice at most of the events from what I've noticed. But lately I've been having a wandering eye and really starting to like SUPERS like the one in this link ( http://www.alfabb.com/bb/gallery/pages/DSC01022_JPG.htm).
Like Anthony (italcarguy) mentioned above, if you are in the area I highly recommend coming out to one of the 2.5 Challenge Races or Alfa Romeo Owners Club events before making a definitive choice on what you would like to run with. Keep us posted on your hunt, as will I.

Cool car Simon. I can't quite place what model it is, my guess would be an SC or Carrera with a C2 bumper???
I don't know too much about Alfas yet, but the shape and the profile of the GTV to me is what's exciting. The classic pictures of the GTV doing battle against 911's and 2002's is what has drawn me in. The fact that an Alfa is so much less obvious a choice than a Porsche, BMW, Ferrari etc is very appealing.
I plan on going to the HSR event at California Speedway. I was just there last weekend for the Grand Am Series race and the PCA club races.
Someone asked what my budget was and that will be decided once I learn more about the GTV's. Right now I would guess $10k-20k. I want to avoid the rookie buying mistakes and get a rust free, solid car with an upgraded suspension, great safety equipment, great brakes and a dependable, stock (stockish) motor. Maybe about an 8 or 9 looks wise. I want to learn the cars driving characteristics, learn to appreciate the marques heritage, learn to work on the car in any way I can.
How complicated IS the motor? The 911 motor is really complex, at least according to all the mechanics
Which car in your link is a Super? What picture #? Is it the blue sedan? And what in the world is this car in my link? If I have to ask, I can't afford it right?

There is some chat going on right now about that Sport Racer on another thread ( AROSC Button Willow Image Gallery). Scroll down a bit to the bottom to find where there talking more about that car. While its not a production car it is powered by an Alfa Romeo motor.
