Steering Wheel Repair

I'm having my sttering wheel repaired on my '61 SS at Koch's steering wheel repair in LA. After speaking to the today, they suggest that to repair the crack in the black wheel rim, the best way would be to take a mold of the rim and replace it with new material since interfacing the old black plastic with the newer materials used generally ends up with recracking because of the differential expansion of the two materials with heat and cold.

To do this they must make a mold of the wheel and they are a bit apprehensive to do this for only one wheel. I stated to them that this is a common problem, and that there must be a number of BB listers who could use this repair. Therefore, this post.

They would be very interested in making the molds for this wheel if there was some interest from others for their services. They state that a complete rim replacement/ repair would be $400 for this wheel once they make the mold. This seems OK since a replacement used wheel in good condition now goes for over $1000.

Are there any listers out there that are interested in this service? If so please respond to this post and at least I can tell them that there are others who would have this repair done, and this would help induce the guys at Koch's to make a mold for the Alfa Wheel.

Attached is a photo of the type of wheel I'm talking about it was in Giuliettas and Giulias of various models.

Perhaps I should move this to the restoration category. I'm not sure how to do that, perhaps a moderator can move it.

I would be interested in the same repair for my '67 Giulia Super steering wheel.

FYI: Although they have different parts numbers, I believe the steering wheels are interchangeable with 102 (2000) and 106 (2600) models. Good used steering wheels for these cars show up on eBay every now and then for about $80-150.

I must be searching wrong, but every decent condition wheel of this type, without a cracked rim has gone for over $1000 recently.

Koch's is going to make a mold for the wheel so anyone who wants a wheel to be repaired should contact them and they can do the repair for you as well.

I should get mine back in a couple of weeks and will post pictures when done.
