Brothers by Design: Alfa MiTo joins 8C for family portraits
Filed under: Sports/GTs, Hatchbacks, Supercars, Alfa Romeo

When I was a little kid I wanted to be like my big brother. I would dress the same as him, go to the same places as him, do the same things as him... It never really worked because, at the end of the day, I never looked anything like him. So while I doubt I was the only one, I had one eyebrow raised when Alfa Romeo set out to mimic the design of its show-stoppin', range-toppin' 8C Competizione with a new entry-level model. A mass-market hatchback designed to look like an ultra-exclusive supercar? Well Alfa arguably achieved just that with the new MiTo, and to prove that point it's graced us with a whole gallery of new images of the two siblings side by side. The kid brother may look that much more junior in juxtaposition, but the resemblance is uncanny. See for yourself in the gallery by clicking the thumbnails below.

That hatchback needs to hurry up and come over to the USA.

True. But I think a better idea would be to offer the 8C $200,000 below retail to current AROC members...

Lets Be Real Folks
One of these cars looks like a stupid chipmonk and the other doesn't.
I'm hoping I'll like it better in the flesh, but maybe there is a 500 in my future.

Yeah, I think it's one of those cars that we'll just have to see in person. Definitely like the back better than the front.
As of now I prefer the Abarth 500 in the looks dept. I think she'll be a really fun car not to mention the great gas mileage.

I like the design very much. I am not sure if having the two photographed together is such a good marketing idea, but that 'baby' Alfa does a pretty good job of keeping the design-style alive in a more practical, small "hot-hatch".
I don't think that anything (in its class) looks as interesting as the Mi.To. Tell me, do the new '500' or the 'Cooper S' look as good? Not to me they don't!

The side profile on the Mito is nice but the front looks like a pug, I like pugs but they are not too easy on the eyes at first. Also the name Mito needs to change.

The MiTo is considerably bigger than many Alfas of old but it fails to look sleek or sophisticated like classic Alfas. Why can't Alfa duplicate that look in a small hatch like they did with the Sud? The pug nose and fat a$$ of the MiTo make it look like a bubble. This trend is okay for the 500 because it always had a "bubbly" look to it. For an Alfa though, not so much.

What it Reall Looks Like
Actually, what the MiTo really looks like to me is an updated Lancia B20. Maybe a bit more Torino in the car than they thought (certainly not much Milan)

Brothers by design ... what a load of bollocks. One is a Maserati coupe wearing better looking clothes but no Alfa Romeo genes at all, and the other is possibly an Alfa Romeo, following on from the current 147. I agree with the comments that the MiTo looks too bubbly.

Me too. Perhaps an animal-MiTo thread?

I really think the Mi.To is a very good-looking hot hatch. I would love to try one out!
