Guilieta 2.0 too heavy on petrol?

I have a 1985 Guilieta 2.0 running on Webber carbs, the car is standard, but the feul consumption is too high for my liking. The car is originally a 1.8, we installed a 2.0 in there, the exact origin is unknown to me, it could be from a Guilietta or a GTV???

I live in South Africa, now I am currently in Cape Town, I live go to and from Kimberley and Cape Town on holidays from university...but Cape Town is almost at sea level, and Kimberley is above sea level, and in kimberley we have a 93 octane and in Cape Town a 95 octane...does this affect things like timing?

The car's timing still needs to be set, and the carbs go into limp mode as soon as I am in Cape Town, then I have to set the revs a bit lower than normal...

Now could the fact that my timing and carbs are not set right be the reason for my heavy petrol usage??? My driving style is definately not in question, because I drive at 60-80 Km/h all the time, I get out of 1st, 2cnd and 3rd relatively quickely to get to the 4th or 5th for cruising...but my petrol usage is still huge???

Any help please???

The type of petrol will not affect your ignition timing, that is set by your static advance , and the advance curve of your distributor. I'm not sure if your model has vacuum advance on the dissy but if it does, make sure the hose is connected to it and all is working correctly. I'm not sure what the static advance is for these engines but usually about 8 deg BTDC is about right. Check that. Once you have checked these things take the car for a drive. Try accelerating hard from slow speeds, and listen for pinging. If your car is running rich, which I suspect it may be, then you shouldn't have much pinging. Your high fuel consumption is likely due to your carbs being set to too rich a mixture, but I don't know much about carbs other than the basics. There should be a mixture screw you can adjust to lean the mixture out a bit. Maybe search some threads for more info on carb tuning. Good luck.
