Still not a bad deal (with the filter) even without the $5 rebate. I've seen Castrol Syntec at over 8 bucks a qt. in a couple of places even though I can't imagine anyone paying that price for it.

Another Option

Another option for those looking to boost the ZDDP level of their oils is the new Break In Additive from Redline, which works with conventional or synthetic oils.

It is called a "Break In Additive" because it is designed to let the rings seat without allowing wear to other parts (i.e. camshafts) but there is no reason it can't be run as a normal oil additive.

1 bottle treats up to 12 quarts of oil, so for practical purposes will do 2 oil changes.

Thanks for pointing that out, Joe - always good to have other options.

From the signals I'm seeing, it would appear that the oil companies have figured out that the SM specs were a bit of a f-up from a ZDDP perspective and are doing something about it. First Mobil1 came out with the 1200ppm ZDDP 15W50, and now it appears they've also boosted their 15W50 Extended Performance to 1200ppm. From the wording on the new Syntec 20W50 bottles it would appear that they have done the same, but I have not seen their new ZDDP numbers yet.

is Mobil 1 stating its contents on the bottles now?

unless they do that its possible that you're buying "old" stuff...never know apparently companies reformulate all the time??????

I always like to be sure about what I'm getting, so I found Castol's labeling reassuring even w/o knowing the exact level of ZDDP

The standard Mobil1 15W50 which came out last year has always been 1200 ppm. The EP stuff was like 900-1000 but at some point (judging from the spec sheet) was kicked up to 1200.

This week PepBoys in my area has a rebate promo going on for Castrol Syntec full synthetic 20w50 + PureOne fiter. I got 5 qts + Purolater PureOne filter; $ 18. seems like a good deal for 5 qts of full syn w/ high ZDDP and filter

Have you gentlemen checked out the quality of these aftermarket filters? You can have the most viscocity-enhanced oil in the world, and it won't matter if your filter is letting in harmful-sized particles. My only point is that filters should be given the same weight as oils (npi) in importance.

Maybe for another thread......

there have been separate discussions of filters;

I think WIX, PureOne, Mobil 1, Baldwin, Hastings NAPA Gold ACDelco, K&N all have good reviews

What about current european synthetic motor oils, like Shell Helix ultra? 5w-40 SL rated, and also rated for diesels. I believe they have a specific formulation for diesels as well, would that be better?

I've been running Helix ultra for years now, and now the engine is open i noticed both the cams and the tappets are like new (2.0 TS). Are the low zinc contents mainly detrimental while breaking in an engine?

4 oz. for how much. If I'm spending that price/oz,
Old Rip Van Winkle

Just buy an oil with 1200 ppm zinc and if desired, boost it up with a 15 oz. jug of STP Red for another 2 bucks.

ZDDP Additives

One of the best ZDDP additive products was GM's EOS (Engine Oil Supplement), which is used as an assembly lube, and great for break-in.

The part number has changed for GM's EOS, as has its pricing!!!! Way up.

The last batch I bought cost me under $7 per bottle, and I bought 4 bottles. Having used this supply up, I went to replace my stocks, and found the new GM part number:

88862586

The retail price is up to $20.52 per bottle (where did this xx.52 come from?).

I was able to buy a single bottle for $15 and change, and am now looking for an alternative... such as STP red.

As oil has worked its way up to well over $100 a barrel, and only about half of it is available through refining for lubricant/fuel products, a price increase is not unexpected, but over $20 per bottle retail!!!

I'm covered for my next oil change, but will be researching an alternative, starting with recommendations above.

Thanks for answering my question before even asked. I've ordered by 3 pack. ZDDP additive at half the price of GM's EOS.
