Bob, I don't think anyone's proposing running anyone off. But I think some simple perks and reminders might encourage people to support the site. Don't want to pay? Feel like you give out more benefit than you're getting? Fine, you can still post, read, whatever - just no gold star for you and you have to wait twenty seconds between searches. That doesn't seem very burdensome.
I'm absolutely against requiring people to pay to post, but I have no issues with different tiers of membership if it helps keep the site going. $20 bucks a year? Shoot, do you know how much time and money this place has saved my sorry butt?

Something subtle like you propose is fine with me but I don't have to code it and maintain it.

I agree with the no fee requirement especially if we want to grow the community. Nothing turns me away quicker than the requirement to pay at a site. It was thru this site that I learned about Roman Tucker who has done a fantastic job in restoring my GTA.
Also the site directed me to Alfaholics that supplied some very hard to get parts. All in all the site was a tremendous help to me as an Alfa newbie.

My local Danish Alfa Romeo site, www.cuoresportivo.dk, charges 100 DKR (18.09 USD as we speak) a year for a membership.
In turn, it says "club cuore sportivo" under your avatar, and you get the right to post in the sales forum... That keeps spammers away, and there are NO issues with snobbery. The webmaster at that site is 164QV on these boards, I am sure he can tell you how succesful this system is (or isn't!)...

Once a year shut down the board for a week. When it comes up again ask everyone to contribute. When people realize how much they miss it you should be able to raise some cash (and some awareness).
People (including me) just need a reminder. How about sending a PM to each member on the anniversary of their join date reminding them that even $5 through PayPal would help...

I really don't get it. Do you really think its OK to have Simon shell out of his own pocket to provide a playground for all of us?
Don't you feel some sense of shared responsibility to keep this site running?
I mean really, are you staking out the moral high ground by steadfastly refusing to contribute?
People are just brainstorming to try to come up with ideas for supporting this site. I really don't see anybody suggesting that we create an "upper class", its all about trying to find ways to motivate people to contribute a fair share to the running of this site.

Seriously, Annual Subscripton vs Google Ads
Thanks, I can live with the Google ads even though I don't like them vs. a subscription program if that helps them make their monetary quota.
I'm glad to see that there are others on both threads that don't want to see an hierarchial system of "marked and ranked" support and recognize the inherent problems that it would cause and the resultant loss of knowledge and sharing. That's not to say that required subscriptions will not do the same, depending on how high the amount is.
The owners and moderators need to find a way to at least cover their costs or decide to run the bb at a loss, which is not unheard of. Whatever their decision, each of us will be affected and at that time will have to make the decision best for our individual circumstances which will ultimately affect the desirability, quality, and continued usefulness of the bb.

Cool Idea Bro.
Yea that would be pretty cool only 12k to run man thats another almost 50K for the forum. That'll be a good Idea to have parts shipped over from italy Like lots of part for our 164. Heck no part holders have interior restoration for the 164 that'll be like one of the best parts to look for, new seats dash carpets ect, ect. Just Imagine how much better your 164 would look with a redone interior Oh yea and especially the CV joints for the automatic,no one seems to carry those around and not just the passenger BOTH even though you have to pull off send them out to get rebuilt it would be nice if you could exchange them like every other cars CVs for rebuilt ones and and cut the wait time in half that would be pretty cool. Oh yea and more choices on Shocks ect, ect. Its funny how most venders here in the USA have more of a choice for the older Alfas in most catagorys than the newer 164 Im pretty sure in Europe theres much more of a lineup than just the one or two here in the states. Well whatever Im in.
