Can anyone ID this engine? :D

I've got no idea whether this is a joke or not, but interesting anyway...

Any ideas?

I would guess it is either a marine or just multi-purpose stationary engine. I'd love to drive up and have a look if I lived a little closer. Appears to have an alloy block but could just be painted grey.

Remember that Alfa produced military equipment for the state during the second world war. I thought it was mainly aero engines, but I am not specialist on this.

I also seem to remember that the roots of Spica injection unit was a diesel injection pump. The pump on that engine bears some resemblence to the front part of a spica unit (albeit 6 ports). This could be a coincidence as the design was pretty generic for diesel pumps for many years), but would not surprise me.

Probably a stationary engine due to the displacement. Alfa tried fuel injection on one of the pre-war 6c2500 Ala Spessa sports-racers in 1939, but went back to carbs.

It looks like a diesel engine to me. I don't see any super chargers, or turbos attached. Due to the displacement I'd have to agree, either a boat, or a pump motor. Imagine the torque that thing makes. 9.3 liters holy cow.

The engine capacity should lead us to the Alfa Romeo Tipo 900 series from the 50ies.
They had 9495ccm and a 6 cylinder engine.
Maybe the seller was a bit unprecise with his 9300ccm.

I think the "workhorse" can also have been converted to a stationary engine later.
The engine was used in trucks and busses of the 900 series.

Btw, a pity that it's for pick up only

Best regards
Ciao Carlo

Some good info on this thread. Just thought I'd post the images of the motor for future reference.

Does look like a converter at the back, doesn't it?

alfa engine

I was interested when I first came across this post and at first thought that the only answer was the one provided by Carlo that the engine came from a Tipo 900 truck and that the seller was incorrect with his capacity of 9300cc. I could not figure out how a ALFA 900 had found its way down under however and thought that it my have arrived in OZ by other means.
During the 1950's ANSALDO exported a reasonable number of tracked tractors to South America and Australia .
ANSALDO model TC60 and TC70 were 4 cylinder models powered by ALFA ROMEO model 1624 ,6330 cc engines.there was a later heavier and more powerful model ANSALDO AF8 using the ALFA ROMEO 6 cylinder engine which was a whopping 12.5 litres , could this be a version of the engine currently for sale? any thoughts!

Certainly possible. An interesting tube-chassied period-looking Alfa "special" sports car could certainly be built using it

Most marine engines don't have fans on them. I vote for heavy equipment/earth mover engine.

The finned (exhaust??) manifold casting is worth the price alone. I wonder what the spacing is between cylinders. Wonder if I could use it on a 2600 motor. Probably too large.

The finned casting looks very reminiscent of the supercharged 8 cylinder engine's intake manifold.
