The NGK's I used in my '72 2000 GTV (both sixes and sevens) fouled. Changed to Bosch Platinum 4's and problem solved.

I am using Bosch multi electrode plugs in my Giulia Super because a guy at the track who was racing a GTV suggested them. These are the first non Champions I have used. They are fine but Champions have always been fine also. Our friend Iori who tested engines at the Ferrari factory insisted that I use Champions in my Ferrari V12. I think that all manufacturers make a good plug now. Not as much difference as there once was. BUT I think the difference back when was more due to manufacturing defects then design.

Maybe I am old fashioned but I've never had a problem with Lodge plugs.

So I guess the answer is you need to experiment to see which plug works best for your car and the way it is set up. One size fits all does not apply here.

NGK Iridiums (BK6REIX or something) in the 164S. Work very well. Better than the Lodge crap that was in there! I'll never use those again! I've tried Bosch as well, but still not as good as NGK.

See that's what I mean by one size fits all does not apply here. I have Lodge in my '91 164L and they work perfectly. Have about 20k miles on them.

Spark Plug Help, Again
The Champion and NGK plugs seem to work best on my higher compression, 1400 motor. The NGK BP7ES was too cold, and fouled easily. The motor liked the BP6ES quite a bit.
I've also been running the Champion RN6YC, which is in the car right now. Works quite nicely.
As I'm going to a lower compression head, I've picked up a couple of spark plug sets, beginning with the NGK BP6ES. When I requested from NAPA, the comparable Champion heat range plug, they came back with an RN9YC, which is a hotter plug than the RN6YC (Champion's heat range runs the opposite direction of NGK).
Having holed a couple of pistons on the earlier motor, I'm a bit cautious about running to hot a plug in any motor, right now.
Anybody have experience with the heat range of RN9YC Champions in their Alfa motors?

Although the RN9YC is what's listed in Champions catalog for all 2l engines, I think it's a bit on the hot side. I'd stick with the RN6YC with the new head but if the plugs foul, recheck jetting first. Then perhaps, if needed, go to RN7YC.

I'm using Bosch in both 164's, standard in L and platinum in S. They both are running great. I've heard that standard last longer than platinum in 164's but I don't know for sure. I have Champion RN7YC's that I will try next time around in whatever car needs them first.
On my Milano I always liked the Lodge plugs.

Going all the way to the "9" heat range seemed quite a jump to me, especially when the "6" was working really great in the motor right now.
I'll swap the "9s" for "6s", and put those in with the new head, in a few weeks.

This spark plug thread should be permanent...
Going through a box of Alfa spark plugs I've accumulated over 30 years, I found out all Lodge plugs are not equal. These photos depict 3 plugs, all labeled "2HL". Apart from the obvious difference in color, the plug in the middle of the first photo has a center electrode that projects 0.125" from the rim of the body; the other two project 0.105". The outside diameter of the insulation of the plug on the right is 0.410"; the other two are about 0.465".
The plug on the right is stamped "95", the middle one "82", and the white one "M4". The first two may very well be manufacturing dates.
Is the middle plug a mis-labeled HL?
I tried to find info on the Lodge company and came to the conlusion it doesn't exist anymore. It had been part of Smiths Instruments since 1962; the Golden Lodge was developed with Lucas (!!!) as a long life plug in the mid 60's. At some point, production of the Golden Lodge was taken over by Marelli. Richard Norris of Classic Alfa states on his website that 2HL's are now out of production.
On my 2000GTV I've been using Bosch platinums for a number of years with no adverse effect that I know of. The car has a CD ignition system with points, and Spica injection.
