How helpful are Cardiscs?
How helpful are they? Are they worth buying? What exactly do they cover?
Any input is appreciated.

I don't have the technical knowledge to speak to the resourcefulness of my disc yet, but I can say I find the quality of the scans to be quite poor in some areas and some are crooked on the screen. I expected higher quality of readability.
For example...the electrical diagram is barely readable. The original one I have glued into my owners manual is fine, which means they just didn't scan it well (or its a copy of a copy, etc.) Thank goodness for Papajam's (Jim's) awesome wiring diagrams, which are simply amazing.
A nice benefit, though, is that everything is in one place. With the PC in the garage on, I can access the whole thing easily. I'm sure others can comment on the content (and they have - I bought mine because the discs are generally highly recommended by people here).

I agree and wouldn't be without mine. Be aware however that the user interface is primitive. This morning, I had a part number. I knew it was a suspension bushing, but wanted to find out which one. I could find no way to locate it other than going through the parts manual section page by page until I found the suspension pages then look for the part number. I found it in the end, but it was painfull. No search function and no index for the parts manual that would give me an idea what page to jump to. In addition, when I found the page with the diagram of the front suspension and hit the print button, I got a blank page printed.... very useful!

Well, depends on the disc. The 164 car disc I have is VERY detailed, but has some holes. That's where alfabb comes in. Then it makes things much easier.
The gtv6 car disc I have isn't really detailed and I was kind of disappointed with that.
I would get one though. Or find someone that will make a copy for you...though i'm not promoting illegal activity. I support it against major companies that are making HUGE profits, but to be able to get future and detailed car discs, it would probably be a good idea to order it from them...IMO..

Mines never worked since I went to XP from Win98. Tried the XP files on their website, which I cannot get to work. Tried E-mailing them a few times, never even had the courtesy to reply.
I wouldn't buy another, I'll stick to the workshop manuals.
Customer service is sh*te

You have to follow their directions exactly. You might even have to uninstall their program, then install the patch or something like that. It does work though. Their ordering forms on their website looks ancient!

If you have an older version disk, the Win XP updates don't work. I asked them about it, and did get a reply, but it was to return the old disk along with about $20 and they would send me a new one. I didn't think that this was great support (I was hoping for a free upgrade), so I didn't bother. I just use a browser now to look at page thumbnails and open them in an image editor. Tough, but free.

I found mine (for 102/106 cars) exceptionally helpful because they gave me an overview of what manuals Alfa had published. I copied my CD on my notebook and therefore have that data with me wherever I go. As for the quality, yes, the compression quality generally sucks on older CDs but that is offset by the volume of information presented. I recommend it to anyone who bought the car recently and is now looking for fairly complete technical information -- if only to see what printed manuals they want to hunt for.
As for the technical aspects, I never liked their user interface either. But my CD contains JPG images only, which can easily be browsed from the file system. I understand newer CDs use proprietary compression (not JPG) that the browser cannot read or display thumbnails of. I guess CarDisc got ripped off quite a bit (I've seen many pirated copies on eBay) and they had to try to protect themselves.

The biggest advantage I see to the CarDisk is that you can print out individual pages of the service manual and take them to the garage with you as you work on a project. That way, you don't have to worry about ruining an original paper manual with greasy finger prints, spilled fluids, or whatever. The quality of the disks varies by model but overall they are worth having IMHO.

I have the GTV6/Milano disk, and am able to use it on Mac OS X 10.4. None of the features work, but all of the PDFs open just fine. Many of the pages are odd sizes, and don't print well at 8.5x11. A tabloid or legal size printer would be helpful!!

Ken, go to their page and download the update software. This will solve the printing problem!
