Ferrari to Build Engines for Alfa, Maserati
Surprised nobody posted this. It's bad news for Alfa fans who were still hoping for a return of the Arese engines. Also, any engine designed by Ferrari will no doubt be both impressive and unreliable. Does one thing cancel out another?

It only says that they will build them for a "for a new line of Maserati, Alfa Romeo, and Lancia models".

That will be only for the top of the line Alfa's. If you can afford one you can afford the required checkups. Ferrari's are not unreliable by the way, but they are expensive to keep up due to their required(unless the owner decides not to) tuneups.

I figured that. Talk to most new Ferrari owners about their cars and unreliable is not what they will tell you. Expensive...yes.

It's better than having Chrysler design them right? Can you imagine a 3.0 Alfa V6 designed by Ferrari? Makes the hairs stand on the back of my neck... I'm all for it.
They're getting 570 bhp from 4.5 litres in the 458 with 400 lb/ft of torque, and 9k redline!
put a 3.0 version into a front engined rear drive convertible and you've got a new cult classic. Think BMW Z4 but good looking.

I was being sarcastic. I personally think that this is a good idea for Alfa and a great way for them to become credible cars for enthusiasts once again. My only fear about it is that Fiat will advertise the hell out of the notion that their Alfas are, in part, designed by Ferrari and that will drive their cars considerably high in price.

Maybe a different opinion, but I think it won't be good news for Alfa fans, as the Ferrari parts for any engine they build would be astronomic in price, as they tend to be now. My Alfa/Ferrari mechanic can easily shock me when he quotes prices for some of the parts he orders from Ferrari. Maybe great engines, but the average Alfa owner will choke on the parts prices.
I could live with Fiat/Chrysler engines with Alfa mods, as the new engines from Fiat are not bad at all, and some Chrysler engines have been quite good in the last few years, witness the new Pentastar V-6 they have developed. And, due to the new ownership structure, Fiat has obtained the right to use these engines, and currently plans to adopt them in the larger models of Lancia and Alfa Romeo, where they could develop as much as 300 hp naturally aspirated, or as much as 420 hp with double turbochargers.

I had heard a rumor that Ferrari was developing a version of the Pentaster V6, so this could be it. It still has Chrysler DNA mixed with Ferrari. Maybe we will get a new Alfa spider with a Mazda/FIAT floorpan, Alfa/Ferrari V6/gearbox/suspension and an Italian designed body. Only problem could be Mazda will copy the Alfa's basic looks for their spider.

Put me in the camp of applauding this news. I think it will boost Alfa's image in North America when people hear Ferrari engines and Alfa Romeo design.

Ferrari are designing the engines, that does not mean they will design an engine as though it is for a Ferrari chassis, ie. 9k redline, etc.
They will have a design specification to work to and it will have service intervals, parts cost, etc.
If we get an engine as good as the Alfa v6 then there will be no complaints.
BUT if they advertise Alfa Romeos as little Ferraris I will be pissed , what an insult for a proud brand.
