cracked valve cover

i just noticed a crack in one of my valve covers about an inch long it must have just appeared there today.. i used a gasket maker compound could this be what caused this? did i tighten the bolts too tightly?

can i fix this crack or should i get a new one?....

Im thinking about welding or ??

What model engine?
Are you sure it is cracked through? It is not uncommon to see tracks of stress lines in the covers but are not really cracks. If so just polish the cover. But if it's a really for sure crack, stop drill the crack at its end point to relieve stress, clean it aggressively and try JB Weld. I also assume you can have it welded (heliarc, etc.) but I lack that skill so I don't know how that would turn out (could warp the cover, for example)

its a gtv6 2.5L. im quite sure its a crack. Drilling out the crack is a good idea.. ill probably use jb weld and sand it down real good and paint them both black. should look good, ive been planning on painting them anyway.. gloss or matte havent decided yet

I had a valve cover crack from an over torque of one of the front bolts.........took it to a weilding shop and had it repaired.
