What would you estimate you spent on the front conversion Walt? (Thanks for that documentation - this conversion has been talked about for over 10 years and I had yet to see anything this detailed) - I take it that the hub spacer moves the disk further inboard yes?

With larger discs abd heavier calipers, you would probably have to run shocks with adjustable rebound to control the extra mass (unsprung weight) - otherwise you'll find yourself in skipping heavily when encountering bumps in the turns,.

For Dave, (who asked for advice on performance upgrades short of big brake kits) I would like to post the following links.

http://www.alfaromeo-performancepart...duct=BDF305SET - 164 Disc and stock calipers (complete with mounting adapters and spacers to widen the calipers. 549.00E or ~$850.00 + VAT and shipping (so, probably just over 1K US).

http://www.performatek.com/frSpecials.htm - take a look at the GTV6/Milano specials, and at the bottom of the page is a Wilwood caliper upgrade (front). Supposed to fit under the stock 15" Campagnolos, and a couple Benjamins over 1K methinks.

Tarox and GiroDisk are for the serious racer$ IMO.

I don't think the skipping part is true by doing a brake upgrade.

Shocks that are over rebound-dampened will cause skipping (personal experience running Koni Yellows on half stiff with stock torsion bars). If there were a lack of rebound, that would cause bobbing of the chassis, but not much of a problem where the wheel meets the road.

Anyone else have another opinion on this?

ToonRboy,

Are you sure the disc is from a 164? Seems to be quite big (305mm x 28mm). I think even the 164Q only has 284 x 24mm (not sure of this).

if they are 305mm by 28mm I think they are the 156/159 front discs. I have this same kit from RSR, but with the standard Brembo calipers, with spacers etc, and my discs are from the 159 I believe. Im not so sure the volvo calipers would gain you much advantage over the brembos with 305mm discs though. With the big disc and the heavy volvo calipers you are putting in a huge increase in weight over the standard set up. The discs alone are a big increase. Not to mention that you need 16 inch wheels minimum to clear these discs, which means you also lose the light weight 15 inch stock Magnesium wheels.

My Mistake. That's right, the 164 has 284mm rotors, so the RSR econo setup uses a different (bigger) disc. Another thing to consider is that in both cases you'll have to redo or modify the brake lines (add cost), and in the case of the RSR, you'll have to rebuild the calipers to fit the spacers and - they don't fit under the stock rims. So, perhaps not the budget kit it would appear to be.

Yeah, I wonder how much - I bet it's considerable. That's why I say you would need to uprate your shocks (and springs). 'Course everyone does that already to cope with all the body roll these cars have...
