GTV-6 - distributor/ pulse generator
I have been having intermittent starting problems and I think I've finally discovered the real culprit. The wire on the pulse generator is a bit frayed and apparently the two ends touch sometimes and short out. The car will start sometimes, then sometimes not. When she was running... I jiggled the wires and she died... so I have a question.
Is this green wire just one wire that is split at the connection? I've tried to trace it from the pulse generator but I loose it in the worms nest. I'm guessing that it leads to somewhere on the ignition?
I cannot find info on it and would like to know if I should strip the wire at the connection and re-solder it. It looks like it's just two female connectors that slip over the male connectors in the dizzy. Does anyone know if the white cap is important? ... I mean does it contain vital parts or is it simply a cover piece? Please look at the following pic. Sorry for the quality... I'll take a clear one in the morn. Thanks for helping me with preschool mechanics!

the green wire is actually a wire within a wire. it has a copper core, then a layer of insulation and then another layer of copper wire completely surrounding it, then more insulation. I dont really know why they do this, the only thing i can think of is that it may help to reduce magnetic interference somehow. I had a similar problem with my car as well. i dont believe the white cap contains anything, its just a cover i think.

Apparently then the two wires should never make contact. I'm holding off until I can find a replacement or a definite way to repair this one.
Thanks for your info!

no, they should not touch. i repaired mine. my wire went bad in the same spot. I ended up cutting the whole wire an inch (could have gone a little close, but leave enough wire to strip and attach a female and male spade connector to each) away from the clip. then i took a small screw driver and popped open the white cover on the clip. i cleaned out the corrosion inside the clip and stripped the end of the wire and attached a male spade connector to one and a female to the other. then i put the little white cap back on and plugged it in to the dizzy. Then i just stripped and separated the end of the wire going to the ignition module and put a male connector on the correct wire and a female on the other wire just to make sure i cannot get them switched and plugged them in. works great now, but in hind site, i think solder and shrink tube would have been much easier and considerably more esthetically pleasing.

So your wire was messed up at both the dizzy and the ignition mod. Good job Bro... I'll undertake the task today! Thanks!

no, just the dizzy end. what i meant was that i just attached the respective clips to the end of the wire that went to the ignition mod.

i took a very small screw driver with a sharp tip and very carefully pried it up, its glued down with something. just be very careful not to damage the wires inside. work your way around the edges of it before you start trying to pry it.
