GTV6: Hydraulic (de)tensioner question

I rebuilt the tensioner seems to work OK and not leak.

Noticed a flapping noise coming from the front of the engine that sounded like the timing belt hitting the covers.

Huge amount of play in the timing belt between the cams.

The spring that keeps tension had come off the shaft it attaches to. The circlip had disappeared. Checking the shaft I cannot see a groove for the circlip to clip into. Is that right? It just grips the shaft?

I may not be making sense here but any input appreciated.

Any other way to secure the spring from falling off the shaft?

Here's a couple of previous posts on this. That spring you're referring to is the "reaction spring" and if you're belt is sloppy loose, it wasn't installed right. You should be able to find a suitable circlip in the "Help" section of any super auto-parts store. Your spring has probably walked to the end of the shaft, covering the retaining groove. BTW-You'll need to re-do your belt install from setp#1.

Thanks for the links Toonboy.

The reaction spring had fallen off at the lower end. There does not appear to be a groove to hold it in place. I have a later 85 as well and that is the same although that has the mechanical tensioner.

I reset the tensioner although I did not have the factory tool or similar. It is now tight even after thrashing it around town for awhile. I shall keep an eye on it.

The reaction spring is on without a circlip as I could not find one today.

Tomorrow.....

Nice to be back on the road. Big grins.
