Spring in Chicago and my 24valve GTV6
Hello all!
I got out the GTV6 yesterday for the first time this year. Here is a quick description: 82 Balocco formerly owned by Alfa Romeo collector John Murphy in Atlanta. Mostly original paint no rust and only 32K miles. Mods are as follows: 24 Valve 164 Quad motor as installed by Mike Besic. Milano transaxle with LSD and a 4.10 rear end. 17x.7.5 Enkei Wheels 17lbs each. 215/40 Kumo MX tires, Dropped Spindles by RJR. 33 mm Torsion Bars from Performatek. Sport rear springs. Shankle Front and Rear Sway Bars. All Poly Bushings from Performatek. Modified Bumpers front and rear. Removed ugly Balocco Stripe....Brakes are stock at the moment. Really a fun car, fast too!

Lovely car. I really really like the stance.
Are the Enkeis in 5x100 and you're using some of those self-centering bolts? They appear to be filling out the wheel wells perfectly. Are they a lower +ET offset or are you running spacers? And how much drop in the RJR dropped spindles?

Wheel and Suspension Details
James thank you for your comments.
RJR Spindles are just over 1 Inch lower at the bottom (I must use 16" wheels minimum). I have a bit of bump steer but I will have this adjusted out.
Correct the Enkei Wheels are 5x100 with offset (wobble) nuts and centering rings. The offset is 35mm.
The shocks are yellow konis.

Great car, great mods, now take it out and drive it like you stole it! 35K miles? Take a drive out to New Glarus, WI or Starved Rock, IL to get some miles on the car to break in all the new mods, or maybe an autocross or two. Its a thoroughbred that wants to run!!

Wow! fantastic!
So how does the 33mm torsion bars behave on the street? What happens if you accidentally hit a pothole?
Your car is gorgeous! I'll bet you'll be wanting to switch out the seats pretty soon for something that will keep you off the door panels
1 more questions:
Does the car have much grunt below 4,000? There's another member with a quad motor in his car and he complains about a lack of low end torque below 4K. I'm wondering if they are all that way, or if it has something to do with headers that are too big...
You should make a quick video and let us hear that thing drive around.

Hi David,
Thanks for clarifying! 5x100 in +35ET, is that a VW setup? Where were you able to order the wheel and associated hardware?
Did you do all the suspension modifications together?

OK where to start?
I will take more pics of the throttle set up. It is a modified Milano/164 set up. Milano inside and 164 outside. Mike Besic did this so....I am not as aware as I should be as to the details. I purchased the car from a friend of mine with the drive train installed.....the Bill for the install and rebuilds was over 15K! My friend supplied the 24 valve!

Hi Grant:
I have been following your progess for some time now. Sorry, I miss typed. I have 27 mm torsion bars like you. They are fine on the street. Yes, the car appears to come "on cam" just before 4K rpm...not a problem for me.

I hope you get to take her out to the track! The 27mm torsion bars didn't work out for my purposes (I'm using a hybrid of RSR front coilovers mated with dropped spindles, and Camaro rear springs out back), but I think you'll enjoy them on a GTV-6 much more. I still remember being impressed by driving my friends 3.0 GTV6 with just shankle stuff back in high school. With those dropped spindles, you should really be cooking!
If you do manage to make it to the track, take some video!

Nice David,
They do good work over there at Besic. You can see it in the intake plenum extension. What brake booster is installed there? Did he convert to L-Jet or retain the Motronic? Overall, a very nice package dude. Though Illinois won't be kind to that wheel suspension setup. Those Enkei's look very good on the Milano IMO.
Good call on the Balocco stripe! I would think that even with a 4-valve, the 3L would still be better than the 2.5 on low down torque (not hard to do). My car is an '84 and has the 4.10 (open) and I really don't even need first gear! I use it because I don't want to wear the clutch plates slipping 2nd on start-offs. I suppose if we had more hills it would come into play from a standing start. Was down in Bourbonnais/Kankakee over the weekend and I could see where that would be a nice place to romp around in the GTV6. Bet yours is one fast cookie!

LS 4 valve is just fine, the Q runners really are a trade off for that extra 20 hp then!

More Questions and Answers
OK:
Where to start?
The car has the stock 164Q motronic with mods to the plenum and mods to the bracket for the cable operated throttle. The Headers are modifed 164Q with custom stainless downpipes. The transaxle is wonderful! Mike Besic built the box with special ratios, the 4.10 Diff and extra limited slip clutches. This is the best shifting transaxle I have driven. The throw is a bit long but it proves that you don't have to modify the shifter to get something that works well....just make sure everything is correct and lube it! I don't know the ratios off hand but they seem to work very well on the street. We shall see at the track.
Yes, the car will go to the track...I am a member of the AutoBahn Country Club in Joliet...so I will have plenty of oportunity. My wife drives a S2000 that is set-up for the track so I will continue to drive that most often as this is really a street car. I really want to take it to the track to evaulate the suspension mods. Lets hope the thing is more neutral than other GTV-6's. Right now the brakes are stock and I am sure that they will be the limiting factor. I have Andy's (Performatek) rear SZ vented rear set up but I have not yet installed it.
Yes, I did most of the suspension mods at one time. BTW, the poly kit for the Watt Linkage made a really nice improvement on it's own. I would recommend that for anyone even a stock car.
I purchased the Wheels and Special Nuts through the Tire Rack...although I have a connection with one of the engineers and he assisted me. Since then I see that Charlie DiMarco has nuts and centering rings on his Serpent AutoSport website. With that set-up and 5x100 wheel can work with the correct offset. I think I am going back to 16x7's as I think taller sidewalls would look better on the car.
Thanks!
David Alexander
