I can see more clearly now, I think, where the market would have been resistant to bling. I forgot momentarilly that there are a healthy number of Alfa Romeo owners who would never think of going down that road, and this is true even of the GTV6 owners (to whom I was mostly referring). I understand the inclnation, the desire for originality, and I also understand the desire for individuality, too.

Upon viewing a well-sorted example from differing fields of view, the GTV6 blows me away with what appears to me like a dramatic, yet understated authority. This authoritative elegance is an enigma that has drawn a cult like following. The GTV-6 was put in the unenviable position of following a legend, the GTV, and it's lukewarm reception by Alfitsi was no different than die-hard Yankee fan's unease with Joltin' Joe Dimagio's replacement, the hard-hitting, if "vacuous", Roger Maris. The GTV-6 will never have the same cache to GTV fans. Never.

I think there are some (both sides) who like it this way.

Last partial hijack.

Well, the original Alfetta GT had ALL in common with the Alfetta expect for the two-door body. Technically the two cars are indistinguishable, except for the GTs shorter prop shaft. Inside, even the centre console was the same. To my knowledge the dashboard is interchangable between early GTs and sedans.

Being a "purist", I wholeheartedly agree. I like my GTV just the way it left the factory, however at one point I still bought one with a Delta-bodykit, that I was reluctant to remove. There was only one thing left to do: get a factory-original GTV too, and that's what I did. No aftermarket bumpers on that one! :-)

I think Biba is refering to the famous Alfetta race car of the 50s

Stefano is correct. I should have said, "Naming it after the original Alfetta..." (See below).

iffn you're gonna bring up those damyankees you need to get your history right.Joe D's replacement in center field was Mickey Mantle, who came up from the minors in either 50 or 51. Maris was acquired by the Yankees from their farm team (a/k/a kansas city A's) around 59....and Maris always played right field. Enuf baseball....on the subject of Shankle- some time in the 80's Shankle merged with Alfa Ricambi. Ricambi sold his stuff until the early 90's when it mysteriously shrunk down to its present alive-but-sorta-comatose-state. I still have my Ricambi/Shankle performance parts catalog. Boy they used to sell some trick stuff!

You are absolutely right, Jim, I stand corrected. I got my history mixed up, I always remember poor Maris taking big heat from the "fans". I'm not a Yankees fan (for the record) - except for the teams that included Reggie. That may inform you that I'm an A's fan from way back.

I sure wish you could scan a few pages of the catalog so we could have a look.............I'm sure I'm not the only one who would love to see it.

Oh, you meant the old one. Why, they are so similar! :-)

There are more than one example of Alfa recycling its model names, like Giuliatta, GTV, Spider and even the famous 1750 Duetto 'borrowed' its '1750' designation from an earlier, then-even-more-famous Alfa (itself not being exactly an 1750ccm).

Truth to be told, I've never seen them for sale, however I have a few of them stashed away somewhere and I never considered them to be extremely valuable. (Like Ruben said: "I have a few sets of GTV grills but they have some rust on them, if you don't mind. They can be repared. I am just saving them for a rainey day. If you want them let me know." I could have said that.)
And looks like the other guys don't dig 'em like you do :-)

as far as the gtv6 vs alfetta...the only thing on the gtv6 i actualy dont like is the bumpers...but ive yet to see/find anything that could replace them and look "good" (those datsun and camaro ones got me wondering tho)....same thing goes for the fetta..love the car hate the bumpers

ive even come to like the wine try hood tho i think if the lines cut in it went all the way across or on both sides instead of being offset to one side would help it

now if only i could find some ballocco clovers to put back into the factory holes in my rear vent areas...silly 83 "leftover" balloco
