Newb safety Q's - Alfetta & GTV-6?

I'm a newb, considering buying my first Alfa. I've been in love with these cars since seeing my first one in Europe circa 1978, and I finally might do something about it. I've been reading up on these cars for years and years. I've read all the buyers guides on this site and others.

How about safety? I sold my 1964 Mustang when my first kid was born. I wouldn't let my kids ride in a car with zero safety features (300hp combined with weak drum brakes, no rear seat belts, same gas tank design as a Pinto, etc). I'd like to be able to take them on occasional weekend rides with me. It certainly won't be a daily driver, nor for long roadtrips (daily driver is BMW 330). On the other hand, I wouldn't buy a car that I'm precluded from carrying kids in.

Ultimately, my other alternatives would be a Porsche 944 or (for not much more) a 1980's 911. These don't trigger the same kind of heart flutters as the Alfa's Guigario design. Eventually, I'd love to get into Autocross or SCCA events.

Similarly, can someone comment on market values for a 1979 Alfetta GT? It's in good condition, minimal rust, some performance goodies. Asking price is $5k. I'm planning on taking it to Alfa mechanic for prepurchase inspection.

Thanks for the thoughts

The GTV6 and Milanos are at least as safe as other cars in their weight class. The Milano has shoulder belts in the rear, but those could be retrofitted to a GTV6.

Kids seem to like the rear seat in the GTV6, it's a lot better than the one in the 944.

I think $5K should get you a VERY nice Alfetta. These cars don't go for much these days...

ex. Check this one

Although these cars don't have airbags, they can offer basic safety features.
1) Good disc brakes (inboard in the rear)
2) A centrally located gas tank (safest from a crash perspective)
3) Seat belts
4) Good visibility, from the drivers seat
5) O yeah and mind blowing handling -great for high speed accident avoiding maneuvers!
As far as auto cross and SCCA, you would probably end up installing a roll cage and 5 point harnesses so that helps. But my personal opinion is that for use in those event your best choices would be either purchasing a GTV6 or Milano Verde.
Good luck and this a decision you wont regret! Far better than buying a Porsche!
