Have you tried opening one of these things? Last time I did it was many years ago, but the old technology stuff was a bi-metal strip and a few contacts. The bi-metal strip heats up and due to the variance in expansion rates the strip bends and contacts, cools and returns. This is repeated and it causes to the lights to flash. So there is not that much that can go wrong. If my memory is correct then either the strip has broken or the contact is dirty. Best thing to clean contacts is alcohol on a piece of printer paper.

Yes, as a matter of fact- what shape are your window handles in? I need the two round knobs that work the front vent wing (or back windows, believe they are the same? I know they fit and work on either) and I would like a matched set of front window handles. Right now I have a mix of a round knob on the end of one, and a notched knob on the other.

Just pry it apart? It looks pressed-fit around the circumference of the base and I fear I would tear it up trying.

It was such a loooong time ago that I'm trying to work from a memory that doesn't work. Damn I'm getting old. I think my recollection of the technolgy part is correct, but I can't even remember what car I did it on. If the unit is sealed then I suppose there is not much you can do. I'm such a stingy, stubborn old codger that I feel if someone put it together, then I can repair it.

I opened one from my Milano a few years ago and used either 800 grit sandpaper or wife’s emery board to clean contacts (similar to points). Don’t recall which . It had 3 prongs holding it together which was easy. No problem since.

I rewired my 81 GTV6 at the fuse box so that it would accept the 4 prong flasher unit from the later cars... it works very well, and I could post a photo if you or any one else is interested.

Yes please. I don't need it now, but if/when I do I know where to find it. A unit from a later car, is it a fairly universal fit like a relay is, or is it still propriety Alfa stuff?

OK, to resurrect this thread..I've been driving without turn signals and really want to fix this issue. Here's what I have- 12 good volts into the who-knows-what-car-it-really-is-for aftermarket auto parts store flasher unit I bought, but only five volts out on the blue-black wire to the turn signal lamps. Results, very predictable-no turn signals. Any attempt to insert a bulb into the socket sucks down the weak voltage to zero. Does anyone have a known good substitute for the flasher unit for these cars?

Last year my flasher went bad. I just walked into an O'Reilly auto parts store and gave him the car/model/year. (84 GTV6). He looked it up in his computer and pulled one off the shelf and sold it to me. It was round, not square like the original and I had to file a flat on the flange end to get it to go into the socket but it works.

O'Reily is a generic auto parts store like Cragans, Auto Zone, NAPA etc. The flasher unit may not be as hard to find as you are all thinking.

Gracias! As I dig deeper, I find that if I unplug and direct jumper 12v off the battery into the new Bosch flasher unit I bought from the local O'Reilly's, I get 12V out on the other two pins, as the factory wiring diagram indicates I should. But when I plug the same flasher back into the fuse box, I get 12v in (from fuse 3) but only 5 volts out to either the blue/black wire that feeds the turn signal stalk or the double black/white that feeds the dash indicator/emergency flasher switch. So, predictably, once I insert the lamps into the socket of any turn signal housing, voltage at the socket drops to zero, as there's just not enough juice to light the lamp. Things are getting curiouser and curiouser.
