Well, I have finally tracked down the source of the exhaust fumes with the help of my daughter who was sitting in the back seat a couple of weeks ago. The number plate lights were the culprits combined with the 8" speakers with broken cones. The black plastic frames of the lights were half missing due to over tightening by a ham fisted previous owner and the gaskets had shrunk, leaving gaps through which the fumes were being sucked when the windows were down. The panel the lights fit into is open to the inside of the boot. The fumes then entered the car via the holes in the speakers. Luckily for me a friend had two spare sets of lights. I made some new gaskets from some rubber sheet, fitted the new lights and I now have fresh air. It is a good idea to use flat head screws and washers instead of countersunk ones to avoid cracking the plastic. The next step is to either replace the parcel shelf with one without speakers (preferred option) or replace the speakers.
