Supercharged GTV6 - Christeen
Hi all,
Well, in the vain of other recent projects on the BB, I have decided to document my own project. I am in the process of supercharging my 1982 GTV6 with a kit that comes from Greg Gordon. Can I first say that Greg has been nothing but amazingly helpful so far. I can't begin to explain how pleasant is has been working with him. Thanks to Greg and Marc (if you're here) for the fantastic assistance you've provided.
Anyway. I've called the car Christeen (any Devin Townsend fans out there?) because it seems the fashion of today to name your projects. I don't know when this will be finished, as I want to take my time and do things correctly. Also this is really my first project and I'm relatively inexperienced when it comes to working on cars, fabrication, engineering, terminology etc etc... But I'm here to get handy hints on the way, and hopefully provide some information to other users.
I'd also like to thank Anthony and Simon and most of the users of this forum. It's been an invaluable resource and I hope it will continue for many years to come.
The car will be running a stock motor with 10 PSI boost. I'll be using a PWR water-to-air intercooler and a cooling mist water/meth injection system. Stage 2 injectors and various other goodies. So far I have removed the air conditioning system, car alarm, window washer reservoir (a necessity to fit the supercharger) and the stock airbox...
I have installed the new injectors, Greg's stronger-than-stock intake couplings and have the radiator off ready to fit the intercooler's heat exchange.
I people can offer me hints and advice.
Some initial pics.
Thanks for listening.
The car
Naked engine bay
New injectors and intake couplings
Radiator removed
An unpleasant discovery!

Hi Alfettish.
You must be a guy Peter(Autotech) talked about. He said that there is a young guy with red GTV6 want to put supercharger in his GTV6.
I'm gethering informations for superchager to put into my 86GTV6(3.0L) as well. I'm glad somebody is extually doing it near by. I'm in Canberra too.
Great project! I will keep eye on this thread.

Yeah I talked to Peter about Haltech systems and dyno time. I'll be (hopfully) getting a TwinSpark gearbox off him soon.

sweeet project man! so i take it with the extra boost, stage 2 injectors and intercooler you will be making above standard power? any expectations on how much? was the age of you engine a concern or has that also been freshened up?
keep the pictures coming - its great to see some aussie based projects..hopefully one day ill be in a position to do something similair

Nice looking v6 - looks well kept. It is such a bummer having to deal with Calif Smog as it prevents doing anything like this to mine
Look forward to seeing it happen - the paint looks pretty decent are you planning on just the motor rebuild or something more??

Hi Mate!
After a few tweeks I should be hitting 220RWHP.
The age of my engine was a concern, but not enough to warrant a rebuild (at least not yet). I'll see how it goes first and then decide on what I want to do. I do have a spare 3.0 hanging around so maybe that's the answer

Whenever I hear people talking about SMOG I am thankful we don't have that system here.
The plan is to firstly complete the current stage (supercharger). Then I'll send a TS transaxle to PACE in Melbourne for their special treatment of the gears and LSD (my car has a 75 LSD though I know it needs re conditioning). The interior had been redone by the previous owner and is very very nice.
After that I'll freshen up the suspension and get new wheels. Then I'll decide if I want to go further or not.

Hi Alfettish,
Is the motor a 2.5L or a 3.0L? just wondering cause you said you had a spare 3.0L lieing around.
thanks

I think Greg Posted Dyno results last week but I remember on his 2.5 he was getting 228 rwhp and his car really moves. There was also a UTube vid of him racing a superchaged Cobalt. The GTV6 smoked it.

thats some damn good power considering the factory specs!...
Alfettish - what sort of treatment do PACE do to the transaxel? just a refurbish or is it strengthened as well? i would imagine the driveline would soon become the weakest link

Great project alfettish.Looking forward to the progress.
Maybe someone can explain the benefits of this supercharger as opposed to alternative ways of gaining power.I'm guessing its the most cost-effective way of getting power.
Goodluck with it.

Just to clarify,
Here are my dyno results.
1. Dead stock GTV6 motor, STOCK FUEL INJECTORS (those were the limiting factor) with just under 7 pounds of boost gave 182 rwhp, up from 125 without the blower.
2. SuperVerde, dead stock 3.0 except for 8.8:1 pistons stage 2 injectors and 5 pounds of boost 205 rwhp. Up from 145 without the blower.
3. Same car but with 7 pounds of boost 228rwhp.
4. SuperRedVerde, dead stock 3.0, supercharger, intercooler, water/meth injection, SDS fuel injection 7.5 pounds of boost 265 rwhp.
5. My personal GTV6 runs a stock 2.5 with Stage 2 injectors and 10 pounds of boost with water/meth injection. It has not been dynoed in this configuration but I am pretty sure it's putting down near 220 at the wheels.
The kit probably has a maximum limit of up around 300rwhp if it's set up for max boost with headers, an intercooler, etc.

Hey Dude! Awesome project, and 220RWHP is going to rock.
Are you sticking with L-Jet??
Greg, what would you guess is the max boost and resultant HP if running: 2.5L dead stock, stage 2 injectors, nice intercooler, but no water-meth? Ballparks obviously....

Hi all, thanks for your interest here.
The motor is 2.5 but I have a 3.0. As far as I know the kit will be fine for a 3.0 motor too so will be able to bolt straight over.
As far as I know, and I haven't actually talked to Vince about what he can do, PACE lighten 1st and second, and renew everything. Not sure if they put new parts, or use old parts or machine their own but it works out really well. Shifts end up being faster, smoother and less crunchy. Also LSD is 50% (or however much you'd like) locked.
For now I'm sticking with L-jet. If I want to go with more power, flexibility etc... in the future I'll use another EMS, but for now I'm content with stock.
