Hey Boss!

Fun project!

You should go all of the way to the shell so that we can find out once and for all just exactly what the bare-metal shell of a GTV6 is - sort of like I did on my 3.7 Milano thread next door here....

Rip out ALL of the old wiring - a 9-circuit kit or something from Painless Wring is like 400 bucks and it comes with a nice little replacement fuse-box for you to mount somewhere - now you can uncoil the wires in the kit and just run them to the basic required elements of the car - head-lights, tail-lights, spot-lights, signals (if you must) fan, ECU, fuel pump and that's it!!!

The GTV6 doesn't have the under-floor crap!? How about below the car?

Hi All,
I haven't had a chance to do much but I went back and took pictures of the progress so far. Basically the interior is removed along with the insulation. It still doesn't look pretty but that will come later.
thanks,
Bob

Hi James,
I'm thinking I'll remove the rest of the glass. Then put her up on Jack stands and start fixing the brakes.

Let me know when you're going to be working, if I'm available I'd love to lend a hand.

Do you know if the brake issue is related to the Master Cylinder or if all the calipers have seized? Are all the components even present?

Fun project. I would suggest to consider making it a runner and trackable car early on. Then you can use it as you move the project along. Also, gaining some experience with the car on the track may help you steer the focus. Most importantly, you don't run the risk of loosing interest with the project half finished and unable to use the car.

My $0.02.

Sounds like sage advice to me. Perhaps the focus should be on finding out if the motor is healthy.....

I totally agree. Although I do consider the brakes Vital to making it run... well stop. I think Brakes then engine is the route I will go. The brakes are a bit less complex and will hopefully yeild some short term gains to the project. Thanks for the advice Jes, the Roxanne project was the inspiration for this one.

Hey Bob,

Had fun working on the car today!

Update: We manage to make progress on the stripping of the car.

- Bumpers off (uncovering some interestingly shaped body work up front)
- Wheels off (showing dastardly, cracked brake lines but perhaps useable rotors and pads up front. Also some missing parts from the right rear wheel bearing area)
- Tail lens assemblies off (showing a small section of pristine paint!!! A really awsome color called Nero Nube Met (I think))
- Rear Hatch glass removed (man that took a lot of weight out of the hatch)
- Rear spoiler removed

Anything else Bob? I wish we'd taken some pics...

-James

Put Lexan instead of glass - you can cut it yourself. You may need a few alu (or similar) strips to help support the Lexan.

We were hoping Lexan was an option!

When you say strips do you mean that they would span the width of the glass? Or would they be across each corner?

Thanks,
James

I had alot of fun too. I think we'll be able to make some good progress on the week between xmas and new years. We tried taking the master cylinder out but didn't have the 13mm socket to get them out and we tried removing the wheel bearing but it looks like that requires a 37mm socket. Can anyone verify the size for the wheel bearing?
After removing the tail lights I got intrested in the original color. The rest of the exterior is so shot that the paint looks like primer. After we removed the light the paint turned out to be a pretty cool metalic grey.
thanks,
Bob

Any way to add some support, I suppose. I know Colin has two in parallel top to bottom on his GTV6 race car - looks good. I think other directions would look odd.

There is a 36 mm nut on the rear hub assembly. I think that is the one you are referring to. On Roxanne a fairly strong impact wrench was needed to get them off. Posts #233-235 (page 16) of the Roxanne thread have some details. Once you get the 36 mm nuts off and the assembly apart you need to take out the threaded retaining rings - note that the driver's side retaining ring is reversed threaded!!!!!!!!!

I think the previous owner removed the retaining clips and then put the assembly back togeather and put the wheel back on.

Yeah, good thought. I hadn't considered aesthetics. Are the supports to hold the lexan against the rubber seals, or to prevent sagging in the center of the sheet?

There were definitely a few parts missing on that passenger side. Makes for a lighter car though, so its all good.

Ricardo is off during the Xmas to NewYears week as well. If we really get a solid game plan together we can be prepared and really make progress. What do you think we should focus on?

My thoughts:
- Its still to early to start messing with the motor
- If we can get what we need to either rebuild or replace the brake master cylinder, we would be able to at least have an ability to move the car safely.
- We should probably get the parts ordered for the passenger rear ASAP, then we can again, roll the chassis without risking damage.
- Calipers might function, but we will need new brake lines. Do you want to go stainless braided? Or could we use the rubber lines from your or my street car as a temporary solution?
- We should get all the stuff we'll need to begin eliminating the rust areas and straightening the body....? I don't know that stuff very well though....

Bob, Anyone? Thoughts?

-James

p.s. Does it not have a hood?
