waterpump gasket sealant?

Do people put sealant along with the gaskets between the t-stat and pump, and the pump and block? Mine had single layer on the pump side of the t-stat gasket, but nowhere else.

thx, Bill

I like to use the Permatex copper spray gasket. Spray two or three LIGHT coats letting them tack up between coats. Stick the gasket to the pump and install all the bolts before the final tightening snugly. Make sure that you tighten them to spec using the same sort of pattern as you use for a head gasket. This will keep the gasket from getting pinched or deforming. The copper spray stuff will fill in any corrosion pits and helps against leaks down the road. It also will make the gasket easier to remove next time you do the pump.

I like Hylomar HPF from Permatex at NAPA and other parts stores.

Stuff works well and doesn't harden making it easier to disassemble the part in the future. Its not sensitive to oil like silicone, so it works way better on oil pans and valve covers.

I suggest that you do a search on Hylomar. I used to be a believer in it until I read these posts. I was still sceptical until I dropped my oil pan and found the nasty sticky mess on the oil pump pickup. I would use it to seal a coolant connection but never where it could end up in the engine oil.

Toyota Formed In Place Gasket. FIPG or "fibage". Use it everywhere. make sure your surfaces are clean and IT WILL NEVER LEAK. Careful though, it is black and will/can get everywhere and it sets up fairly quickly. 5-10 minutes before it forms a skin.

I have a tube of Toyota FIPG out in the garage. It is some serious stuff. Mine might have hardened in the 5 years since I used it to replace the oil pan on my Land Cruiser though.

If you use the hylomar as a thin film it works fine.

+1 for Hylomar Blue. You just need to smear a small amount on either side of the gasket.

I use Hondabond, same thing as Yamabond, all the time, even between the sections of the transaxle, I have never had a problem with it.

Well, I got some Permatex "Waterpump & Thermostat Housing" RTV silicone which says it's resistant to water and glycol. I also found that my Toyota FIPG is still good, so I just need to make up my mind which to use.

Thanks for all the suggestions,
Bill
