Rescue Project Thread - NJ Alfetta Sedan

Hello all,

I have been looking for a project for a few months. The purpose was to get a sick alfetta or milano to 1) try and fix it and get that experience, and 2) to part it out for my own spares if I can't get it running. If I do get it running I may sell it as is or strip the trim for spares and sell/donate it to a "LeMons" race team if there is any interest.

Found this alfetta from the for sale ads here. Since another BB member wanted the wheels off this one the net price dropped to the point of "gotta do it" so off to NJ I went. The seller was the son on the original owner, and lives about 5 minutes from Englewood Cliffs, NJ, former home of AR here in the States. Really nice guy and knows my plans for the car.

I will document my progress on this thread. As of now, I am not selling the car or parts from it but will post when/if that comes to pass.

Now for the description and pictures. 79 sport sedan, one family ownership, NJ car so RUSTY. All trim is present and other than rust the body is not dented. Came with 5 alloy wheels and 5 steel wheels. Car has not been on the road in 15 years. Been inside since the early 90's but the rust already got to it. Clutch has no feel at all - flapping around. Hood release in op. Interior is leather - fronts are split. Sunroof. Pictures attached - as it came - not even washed yet (I think the 15 years worth of dust/dirt/grime is what is holding the car together!). Some type of rodent nest in the trunk. I'm off to search for how to open the hood then a wash down.

Engine and after a wash

Got the hood open - easier on a sedan than gt/gtv6. Looks like there may have been an engine fire at one time. More pictures - engine and after a first wash - not clean but good enough to work on without getting dirt everywhere.

You are sick.

That's a lot of car for $700. That's going to be a fun project. The body looks straight, How many miles?

Keep us posted...

Thanks for the encouragement - I am going to need it!

The seller was willing to negotiate on price - I think he liked what I was planning on doing with it. It was his Dad's car so he wanted it put to good use. No matter what this Alfetta will either live on or help others stay on the road. We were able to come to a deal a little off his asking price. Mainly because I had to drive a trailer 550 miles round trip (in one day) to get it and I had to figure that into the cost.

The body is amazingly straight. My other Alfetta SS has almost no rust but lots of little dents. The more I look at the pannels the more I want to take the hood and trunk, have them painted black and put on my other SS as 90% of my problems on the black alfetta are with these two body parts. The car has about 95k on it more or less. I already took the middle grill off this one, cleaned it up, and swaped it to the black car.

One thing i noticed doing this was that the NJ fetta's grill was heavy metal while the black fetta's center grill was light plastic. Anyone know about this? I didn't know Alfettas came with metal grills.

Mid day break

In for lunch, got the seats out, scrubed down, and put some leather protector on them. Both front seats are split and the rear top part has splits from the sun. Also got the sunroof to open and the interior carpets vacumed. Pictures below. I do like the seats - does anyone know about how much it would run to get them restiched? Just a ballpark figure would be great. Next up is the door panels which look really good - I may swap these into the black alfetta that has the gray velour door panels. I certainly will if I decide to keep these seats and swap out the milano seats that are in the black car.

Yes - I've seen both types of grills too - even for the coupes. Not sure which came first, but I always supposed that one came from the factory and then replacements were the other type.

When you get a chance - shoot me the VIN# on this one, thanks!

Pictures of the door panels cleaned up, door problems and VIN plate.

Panels turned out nice. Probably going to swap these to the black car. The first door picture is what most alfettas look like when you take off the door panels - rusty and full of leaves that block the drian holes. The second picture shows what happens when you don't clean the gunk out. I guess the silver lining is you don't have to worry about water drainage anymore. Last
picture is the VIN for the register.

From the "Why did Alfa do THAT!" department - Does anyone know why alfa would have the holes in the leather interior door pannels slightly off from the holes in the cloth door panels? Looks like I have to drill into my black alfa to put these door panels on.
