My Alfetta has lost her "throaty" induction sound, why?

Hi all

Picked up my Alfetta from the workshop today after having a top overhaul. The engine & car runs fine. Temp stays 85C, engine idles fine, power was ok.

But when i rev it in 2nd and 3rd gear (any gear for that matter), the engine sound more like toyota 1.5 than a twin dellorto Alfa 2 litre... i.e. no induction roar just tinny jap small bore engine sound...

Any idea why? Can advancing/retarding the ignition make that much a difference? The mechanic said his timing light broke, so he cant time the ignition properly... Hmm...

Oh by the way, there is no pinking sound even if i floor it in 4th gear from 1500rpm... so it cant be the ignition.

Help!

Cheers

Syed

It probably is the ignition timing but could also have the cam timing off. Why would a mechanic let a car go without finishing the job? You can buy a cheap timing light and set it yourself. Does the car have points or does it have electronic ignition? If the points are set wrong if will also run bad.

Hi Paul,

Sent the car back to the mechanic yesterday and asked him to do it properly this time (and get a new timing light!). I'll see what the sound would be like in the next few days...

Cheers

Hi. Picked up the Alfetta today.

The carbs were in need of adjustment. Also the ignition timing was way off. He changed all 4 plugs too. Car runs like a gem now (If only the weather would cooperate...)
