Alfetta Braking Problems

so yet another thread about problems with alfetta. she's really making me pay for all the time i've had her parked over the last 5 years.

but new brake hoses went in and was pressure bleeding the system but the MC reservoir is cracked and getting worse. it's very difficult to get all the caps to seal in order to use my power bleeder and i've made the cracks worse.

so does anyone know the reservoir replacement options. i know about the $118 one at IAP but frankly, that's not an option. is there one from a different car which will fit? or a more generic one which is super cheap?

i've seen one which only has the filler cap with 2 connections for the warning light so i'm guessing there are options out there.

currently, my car has an ATE master cylinder with 3 caps on top of the reservoir: 1 larger center cap for filling and 2 caps for the warning light floating switches.

Try one out of a Volvo 200 or 700 series.(can't remember which, I think 240) The level sensor is only two wire with one sensor so you will have to rewire yours. They are cheap.

i've found an MC + reservoir off a spider but just need to know if there are any problems with this part fitting my car. i know the ATE MC's are the same but the seller says the only marking on his MC starts with an "F."

does anyone know what this is?

thanks for that tip even though i'm ashamed to put a volvo part on my alfa, ha ha! but a quick trip to the local pick a part and i got a reservoir off newer volvo but it was basically the same as one i found on a 240DL. i think most of the rectangular ones on volvos are basically the same fit even if they look slightly different. it looks to be the right fitment but i haven't tried it yet, but the measurements of the bottom nipples is similar. if it fits, it is a great find as i only paid $5 for it and it only has the single cap so i can use my pressure bleeder on it with no problems.

so thanks paul for that tip. i'll post tomorrow about how it works out ....

also, on the discs, i know that the minimum resurfacing thickness is 10mm, but how much material does a resurfacing remove? mine are at 11mm so just wondering if i can get one more run off of them since i don't really drive this car that much and i hate to put new discs on it and then just have them rust and go bad. BTW, pads are done so i have to switch those out which is what brings this whole question up.

damn, you guys didn't think it would be that easy, did you? well, of course it doesn't fit. the problem is that almost all newer reservoirs with that spacing use a bigger nipple. so another trip to a bigger pick a part and this time i'm smart enough to bring my old reservoir. and after checking every single volvo, bmw, mercedes and any other euro car i could find, every single MC used the bigger nipples! until the absolute last row where i came across a '74 mercedes 280c and after unlatching the hood and digging out the MC from under a pile of leaves (no kidding here) i find a similar 3 cap reservoir. missing one small cap of course, but good enough to work although i really want to get rid of the 3 caps.

so this one should work for now.

of course we've all been down this road before ....

so here are some pics. the original is on the left, followed by the big nippled volvo which doesn't fit and then the mercedes 280C with the small nipples.

and a better look at the bottom nipples

and here it is as installed. no cracks and everything fits well but still not air tight enough to use my pressure bleeder. guess it's back to the old traditional bleeding of "push it down, let it up," etc. etc. it is a bit crooked due to the placement of the mercedes nipples but no big deal unless you're anal or in to fung shui. still would like to find a single cap reservoir but for now, this is pretty decent. and especially for $8 at the pick a part!
