Alfa Romeo GTV6 2.5 Group A Rothmans Loubet Replica

Hi!

Today, Ive startet the work in my new project: to build a replica of the GTV6 french rally champion Ives Loubet drove to class victory in 1986 Corsica Rally.

I'll post all the advances and updates here as soon as possible, but I've started an 'official' blog where I'll post with regularity: Solo Alfetta / Alfetta Only

The starting point is this, a 1984 GTV 2.0, with very solid body, some dings, and few rust spots, just only two, but with very sorry looking.

Best regards, Alvaro.

Hi!

Rothmans livery was one of the pretiest ever, in any car: Porsche 911, Auti Quattro, Porsche 962, Lancia Stratos, Lancia 037, BMW M3 E30.....

This was like the car looks when it was raced by Ives Loubet at the tragic 1986 Tour de Corse:

This was the same car, raced in Spain, hired by Pep Bassat...

And this is supposed to be the same car today

More info in this topic at forum-auto.com

I'm looking for pictures of the Yves Loubet Alfa Romeo GTV6 - Histoires du sport automobile FORUM Histoires du sport automobile - FORUM Sport Auto

Best regards,
Alvaro.

Hi!
Some advances. We are currently working to leave the body completely naked beforte start welding.

We took off all the old wiring loom, completely. It looks to be in a decent state, has no patches or horrors, except for an awful connection for the radio and a couple of unindentified things in the door jambs, never seen on a GTV. They look like an alarm sensors.

We took off too the last remains of the insulation mats, in the fire fender. It weights quite a lot. No point for thinks like these in a full race car.

Floors look nice. On drivers left corner we found a light surface rust, not worring, possibly originated by humidity.
Everything else is near perfect.

The best way to work on the body is to left it completely naked. We started to took off the bituminic coat from the inner floors. With a strong palette knife, it goes. Hard work, indeed, but it keeps going with no mutch effort, sometimes lifting big pieces of this stuff. In the joins between sections, we found a mastic gum. Is here where the coat is harder to crack and lift. This areas must receive the electric rotating wirebrush.

Details from drivers corner floor.

Co-driver floors.

Next works will be on rear floors. Here, the coat seems to be better glued, it mixed with some other stuff, and its harder to lift.

Nest weekend I'll receive a car-lift fro the garage, so work on car will be close to none.
Stay tune!

Remember I'm uploading pictures and news in my new blog, take a look at Solo Alfetta / Alfetta Only

Best regards,
Alvaro

Alvaro,

Get some dry ice from a welding shop, then spread it out on the tar for a few minutes. It makes it brittle, you can then just hit it with a hammer and it comes off in sheets. Not so easy to keep the ice in place on the tunnel and other non-flat bits though

Hi!
Nice suggestion. A friend of mine also suggest to use a ice spray can, a spray used to cool or freeze electronic componets.

Thanks, a lot!!

Best regards,
Alvaro

Looking forward to continued updates on this. This car has a cult following amoung alfisti around the globe and it will be great to see a live tribute to it.

Hopefully your version will capture the spirit better than the dull looking shadow of its former self photo from earlier in the thread.

What wheel and tyre package did it run/do you plan to run?

Hi!

Thanks a lot for your words and support.

Yes, the Loubet car was one of the most raced and victorious of all racing GTV6's, and IMHO, was one of the most beautiful ever (with the Totip liveried cars too), even in white/red livery.

If anyone take a look at the pictures, specially from the Corsica Rally, the word that start to sing in you brain is: MENACING. It was a very agressive looking rally car, and thats the spirit I'd want to captivate and reproduce.

My hope is to replicate the car, to the most exact specs as possible in the exterior trim and livery. Technical specs and interior will be updated to modern standards and current racing/safety regulations, but trying to keep the vintage style and looks. That's the point.

My plans are to fit 16" wheels. Loubet raced those milimetric tyres, and they are near impossible to get and are pretty expensive. Also 16" racing tyres are the current standard in rally racing today, are cheap, and some are street legal.

I don't know now what brand will fit, but BRAID wheels, with centre piece in white, will look at home in this car.

These wheels in the picture, would be the corrrect ones, but I don't know what brand did them.

Best regards,
Alvaro

Hi!

I think they are not Revolution wheels, but are a very similar design.
Anyway, Revolution 5 spoke wheels would fit nicely, but they only produce them in 15".

Thanks a lot for the info!!

Best regards,
Alvaro

Performance (in Australia) so a wheel called the Superlite (nothing like the famous minilite of course...) which looks good in a 16 and may suit the period of the car.

Hi all.

A new day working on the car.

Today I've completely removed the tar coar in the floors. 3 or 4 kilos of this stuff.

Tomorrow, I hope to clean all the joins, removing the mastic sealant with a wire brush attached to the angle grinder. Some of these joins will receive a soldering points to reinforce the monocoque.

Some pictures:

Some time ago, a forum member asked about the mounting points for rear seatbelts. In this picture, you'll see them clearly....

Salute

Updates!!

Work keeps going on!

Yesterday I took off the fuel tank. This was a four banger 2.0, so the tank was on the left rear corner, under the boot floor. With this item off the body, this means all the back end is free of any stuff.

Work then focused on the exhaust, a rusty one, and the headers.
Also, the main battery cord was took off.

I drilled the rivets of the front wheel splashguards. This is a sensible rust area, roard dirt gets trapped here.... add water and you will get the perfect combination for rust.

Bad surprise: a great ammount of debris, mud, sand and ugly s*it were found. Incredibly stratified.... good for palenontologists. Good news: the area is not rusted. This car spend most of his early life in a dry climate..... in the south of Spain...

Checked the bottom floors, with some very superficial rust poins, nothing to worry, and some bends on joins caused by bad jacking not using the proper jacking points.

Took a good look to measure the space avaliable and distances.... for a DIY quickshift I'm planning.....

Next week, I hope to get my new car lift operative, so the car will be properly inspected and the transmision and gear box will be removed.

I'm thinking about to build a rotisserie.... saw this a week ago: simple and effective:

Stay tune for more updates!!
Salute
