Alfetta reverse light switch

Hi, my reverse light switch has packed up, open circuit constantly.
There was another similar switch on the box which isn't used (don't know what was for) so I decided to swap it, however this switch seems to work in reverse (not reverse gear).

So how does the reverse light switch work? I take it that the switch's plunger is full extended when in forward gears and the contact is open and when reverse is selected the plunger is depressed and the contact is closed.

Are these switches still available?

I don't have an answer, but I'm curious about the operation too, for another reason: when I put it in reverse, if my radio is on, it goes to static. Is it grounding out? Where is it located too, at the gear lever, or back in the transmission?

It's on the gearbox. It is normally open and closes when in reverse. I have no idea how that would effect your radio, but hey, it is an Alfa.

BTW, I replaced my mechanical switch with a proximity switch which drives a relay. Seems to work well and best of all, no wear and tear.

The alternator light glows dimly on my car when the reverse lights come on.
