Engine Rebuild

Hi,
I am changing the head on my 76 Alfetta. I want to hone the cylinders and replace the rings but I’ve read several warnings in this forum not to disturb the cylinders when changing the head gasket.

Can the cylinders be removed and then reinstalled and sealed from the top with out pulling the motor?

Paul

Paul its unlikley that the orings at the bottom of the block will be disturbed unless you already have an issue with them. After you remove the head place a section of pipe over the head studs to hold them down using the head stud nuts to secure. They will be fine. You could also remove them and put new seals in but you dont need to especially if the block isnt full of corrosion.
You can re-ring a alfetta engine in the car. Head and sump off. Undo the rods, pop the pistons out and hone away.

Of course if you have other issues like leaking rear main seal or your liners are undersize then forget about it.
