Gunmetals slow upgrade/update thread
Firstly just for a bit of a background as a starter for this long winded work in progress. I purchased my 1982 Gtv/4 in march 2003, and in the 2 and a bit years I’ve owned the car it hasn’t "really" given me as much grief as most people assume I’d have because its an Alfa.
I was aware when I bought the car that the 2nd gear syncro was not at its best and the 3rd gear one had a habit of sticking. Lately this has been getting worse and worse, especially driving in peak hour traffic on the way to uni.
Last week I noticed a damaged 1985 giulietta on eBay. The description read
"Damaged 1985 Giulietta Sedan 2.0 White. Hit in front right while stationary. Still drives, no registration
Motor Good. Head re-built by PACE 30,000 Km ago. 14" Fact Mag Wheels, good tyres. Gearbox/Transaxle new syncros 4000 Km ago, has slight diff whine.”
Which I wasn’t about to believe totally, but I figured why not. So I bid and won the auction for $112.50AUD. I was stoked.
After talking to the owner, I became aware that she was a true Alfisti. She explained the history of the car since she had been in possession of it, and confirmed that the syncros had been done in November or December last year (I honestly can’t recall which she said)
So the plan now was to use the gearbox in my car and replace the clutch, clutch housing bearings and the donuts while I was at it.
So this thread is going to follow my journey of the giulietta parts car.

I picked the car up and the chick whos car it was was really nice and a little emotional about getting rid of the car. Unfortunately the battery was stone flat so I couldn’t start her up

I was really surprised how much of this car i can use on my GTV. It had quite a few things I didn’t expect such as power windows and central locking. And as a EXTRA bonus, the engine had electronic ignition.
At this point I was very excited, but it was getting late so I couldn't do much.

so I ripped out the old battery today and put in the battery from my gtv ( 100cca smaller :S ) and tried to fire her up. Got a kick and good oil pressure but nothing worth writing home about. Tried again and got backfire that blew the air filter off the housing (the cover was off). Checked the plugs and there it hit me bp7es..... thats too cold a plug for an alfa engine, pulled the rear most plug out and it was obvious why it wasnt firing.
Fouled... as expected so i went inside to my box of old plugs from my car (i keep them "just" incase :P) and dug out 4 bp6es plugs, set the gap properly and head outside to put them in. After fighting with the 2 & 3 cylinder plugs i had them in. Turned the key and straight away she fired up and after a few blips of the throttle, idled within about 50 seconds.
Very happy about that, but its obvious that the donuts in this car are in similar condition to the ones in my car, as the all familiar vibration was present. I let her (according to the PO she isnt a she but a hermaphrodite called henrietta) warm up and gave her a few rev's, which felt stress free and gives me the impression the engine is nice and strong (power wise).
I then attacked the interior and found (to my delight) that the console in the middle is the same basic design as mine so i can retro fit this newer (and better for stereo and power windows) console into my car.
I'm pretty confident that i can get the electric windows to fit, the same with the central locking.

G'Day Andrew,
$112.50 was a great deal, you could sell the carbies and head for twice that EACH.
I would be a little concerned about wether the dog gears were changed, might be worth checking with the re-builder or splitting the box and checking.

I'm going to pull it apart and take it to garry for confirmation. I will probably end up selling the carbs from my engine (these seem to be better tuned) and using my engine from my gtv as a test bed for me to build up a turbo efi setup.
