By seeing it again it looks like the did some weakening if the structure to make it fly apart like that. Then again maybe not. We get used to seeing race cars fly and hold together pretty well. Like this BMW

I am sure they did. I have seen some nasty 164 accidents and the car is very strong but flying that far and high who knows right? I don't plan to test it anytime soon LOL!

I watched the sequence over, and several things come to mind:
they ran the car square into the divider
at the speed of impact, the divider broke through the bumper crossbar
as the car started to rise over the divider, it tore the subframe apart
without the above two "ties", the chassis halves were "independent" and there was nothing to hold the very heavy engine and gearbox together while in flight
Spectacular crash, without a doubt. And those with 164's, don't aim straight for a divider!
Could the fuel pump would be getting that much volume up to the front like that? I would take a guess that it was coolant from the radiator being crushed/split (with water being used instead).
Looked like an L based on the alloys, foglights, and sunroof - but on initial getaway it looked like debris coming from rear wheels like it was a Q4. Hmmm... euro headlights, headlight washers, inner driver door handle, lot's of good valuable parts
If Jon and Lenard had helped him rebuild the suspension last week he might have made the exit ramp, but I have to agree with Jason, white ones go faster and fly farther
Have to admit it gave a nice view of the chrome intake runners!
