Thanks... Amazing to see the cars, in their youth being driven by youth. I'm glad Peter had the cash and interest to get a good camera and spent the time capturing the images on fun roads. It would be very cool to see more!

When I was 18, I bought my first Alfa and a good friend bought a Datsun 240Z. We did the same thing... just drive around and shoot pictures of the cars going down roads. We just enjoyed driving, and enjoyed looking at the cars. Still do.

Amazing video and cool to see the roads i drive my alfa on were being used for GTOs back in the day.

What i would like ot know is; how did Stephen Mitchell afford a Ferrari GTO at the age of 19? Even back then, $18k for a car was a lot.

Who said $18K? New GTOs were $12,500 in 1962, by the late 60's exotic dealers were happy to get $3000 out of them. It's not until the mid 70's that they reached $18K. In 1970 you almost got a new Daytona for that kind of money.ggg

Ferrari 250 GTO - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

maybe you should right to whomever wrote the wikipedia entry.

kinda odd they would be only $18k in the mid 70s, and then over $2mil in the early 80s? i guess stranger things have happened.

The video was shot in 1969 or 1970. $18K is about right for 73-74; in 1975 I had a discussion with a fellow who owned a pair of Daytonas (a brand new Spider, which was the rage back then) and I asked why he would not buy a GTO. He said he was offered one in France for $100K, which we both felt was a bit high.

A lot happened on the car scene in the seventies: the manufacturers were learning to cope with the smog and safety rules, the first energy crisis hit us. There were rumors that convertibles would disappear from the market, and by 1975 muscle cars were already history. Ferrari decided that the Dino 308GT4 would be its only model sold in the US (which meant no US Boxers); the US Maserati Merak was barely faster than a stock 2000 GTV. Aston Martin and Maserati both went bankrupt and werer saved at the last minute.

The new car picture was very gloomy and doomy, and I've always believed it sparked much of the interest in preserving and collecting older sports cars.

so was msrp $12.5 or $18k? i dont think $18k has anything to do with the video or the fact it was in the 60s. i guarantee Stephen Mitchell bought that car for next to nothing. He was 19yrs old at the time and he mentions that he bought the car w/o a motor. Im guessing somewhere around $3k.

wikipedia is saying msrp $18k in 1962. whats up?

Is Mitchell still around? We could ask him if he were. Try Googling.

Both the May 1962 and May 1963 issues of Road and Track (the New York show issues) quote a price of $12,900 for the new Ferrari "berlinetta" as it was called back then (all the 250s were the same price... 2+2, spider...). The December 1963 issue has an ad by Spencer Pontiac Buick of San Diego for GTO #4219, $14,000 including spares, tools and extra wheels. More info about #4219:
250 GTO s/n 4219GT
