Unhappy Alfa 164 engine destruction

The 164 became eligible for the USA's Cash for Clunkers program. The dealers are required to seize the engine before the car goes to the scrap yard. Here is a video of a 164 running for the last 1:30 until the motor seizes up. It is very sad.

I know it is sad and I am sure our 96 GC Jeep with 243,054 miles on original engine has by now meet the same fate but my bride is sure enjoying her new ride which does not leak on the driveway nor drink quart of tranny fluid on a weekly basis and have to have a 3-4 Mississippi count after key turned on for fuel pressure to build up so car will start.

Don't beat me up to bad as I am still rationalizing here folks that a car payment was worth it, gulp! BUT we still have all the 164's as daily drivers.

Bottom line, no Alfa fan would have ever traded that car in. I'm sure alot of decent cars were sacrificed for this program, which is a cryin' shame. On the other hand, it saved many dealers from going out of business in our area and across the country, and got much garbage off the road, which is good. As much as I hate car dealers, they employ alot of people, not just employees, but body shops, parts stores, detailers, car wash, stereo stores, tire stores, etc, etc. I'm afraid this is what you call a catch 22, damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Emblematic of precisely why more government is not the answer.

Muddle-headed thinking of the first order.

Smile Clunkers

I think Ronald Wilson Reagan said it best. " Government is not the solution to the problem, government IS the problem, "

That is so wrong in so many ways...not even sure where to start. In the UK, our Scrappage scheme insists the cars are crushed - again, completely mad.

I'm pretty far from 'green' but this is as bogus as a Toyota Pious (sorry, Prius).

Tom:

Would you explain how a program that lasted just a few weeks could have "saved many dealers from going out of business"? Perhaps it delayed their bankruptcies, but saved? I just don't see how.

Stop by those dealers this month, and see how they're doing without CFC artificially driving sales. What structural changes did that program bring about?

Why can't the govt. take down the VIN, make sure these cars can never be registered in the US again? Then they can get some cash from these by auctioning them, but only for scrap purposes (i.e. sell to parts dismantlers) .

I think the govt. also wants to get rid of ways to keep old cars running, hence preventing usable parts from these clunkers from being channeled to the used car parts business. I guess they hope to boost sales of newer cars.

I think the cars for clunkers program is good, but this part of the program shows sheer stupidity.

What that was that you witnessed folks, was a late term abortion on a car. Our government embraces the practice on humans, so it comes naturally for them to do it to a car.
