74 GTV-Couple of ??

OK, so I was given an Alfa. I know nothing about them except when I decided to sell it I was bombarded with people clamoring to take it off my hands. I am a car guy. I own a couple of hot rods so I understand the car collector mentality. I also understand how hard it is to find decent parts at decent prices. I have no idea what GTV stands for. I really have no intention on doing anything with it but I would like to get a fair price for it. I belong to a forum for First Gen Firebirds much like this and for the most part the members are willing to give good advice to the novice or anyone that asks. So if someone could give me an honest evaluation of this car and a resonable asking price I would be very appreciative.
It is a 74 GTV. 5sp. It has rust issues in the trunk and on the rr quarter below the bumper. It has some rust through on one side of the windshield. The rf fender need some amount of body work(just to bang out a scrape). It has some electrical issues. It had a short in the radio and now the starter seems to be stuck. The fuel pump is pumping fuel so I think if you got it to roll over it would probably start up. Someone has moved the battery to the trunk. The pics I've seen show the batt in the engine comp so I don't know if they moved it for weight transfer or what. I figure it would probably make a great race car but if it some one was good with Alfas it could probably be saved. Here's a couple of pics. Please let me know what you think before I give it away too cheap.

Thanks for the help
Robert

value for your gtv

your probably looking at between $1200 and $2500 give or take depending on how bad the rust is and whether you are on the east or west coast it would be worth maybe alittle more on the east coast

GTV prices have been on the uprise lately but Id say from the photos Martin is right on with his price of 1200 - 2500 depending on how much rust is there.

Welcome. You need to head down to Irvine's Ford/Mazda Center this coming weekend if you're in S. Cali and after looking around a bit, you'll keep her.

If you do decide to let her go, I think Smestas needs a few parts.

Gran touring veloce (?) = GTV

Veloce = Rapidly. Used chiefly as a direction. or Played at a fast tempo.

Thanks Ham for the explaination. Being as how race fuel flows through my veins already, it's getting harder everyday to not fix this thing up but in truth I just don't have the time and I believe it should be a crime to let a good car sit and rot away because "I'm going to fix that up one of these days". We've all heard that more than once, I know I have. Only to see an old GTO sit in the same place year after year getting worse and worse. I am already a member of the NASA racing group and enjoy it very much. I can see the potential for a great race car everytime I look at my front window but I'm only one guy and there's only 24 hrs in a day so I'll let it go to someone with more time and appreciation of Alfas than me. If I were retired...definately a different story.

Nice. Is that a Firebird? I'm a little rusty with my Ponty's. Looks like a 68-69?

I used to have a triple white '75 Esprit myself, but I had to sell it before I went in to the Air Force. Man that was a sweet car! Never had a car with power windows that would go down as fast as that Firebird's. Now, rolling them back up was a different race altogether!

I hear you on the time part. I'm sticking by my '74 GTV's side. I rescued her not too long ago and I feel it my duty to take care of her. I look at it as an adoption. Leavin' it better than I received it.

Welcome to the forum Robert. You should post more pictures of the issues. They sound fairly common. If she is complete....and she looks it....I would venture a guess of 3-5K on ebay. It really just depends on how crazy it gets with the bidding. These commonly go for around 10-15K in very nice condition.

Best Regards,
John M

Yes Ham, Good eye. 69 Firebird. 400, 4sp, 3.23 posi, deluxe int. Way too much money invested in it. It's pretty much my baby and I feel about it the way most of you feel about your Alfas. My wife refers to it as "the love of my life". It's been through a lot with me. Engine fire, totaled in an accident, 3 engines, 4 paint jobs. There isn't much on the car that is original anymore but it still puts the biggest smile on my face everytime I get to take her out of the garage. Just wish gas was cheaper so I could drive her more.
The rust issues on the Alfa are not all that bad to someone that was a decent sheet metal guy. If it were a bird you could buy a replacement lower quarter and section it in, or a full trunk pan etc...but I don't know if that stuff is as available for the Alfas. Still it would have to be a labor of love to bring it back. I'm glad to see it go to someone that will give it the attention it deserves.

Robert

A running GTV with typical rust and decent interior will be go for mid-fives. It looks like your dash is cracked and your seats are ripped: subract $1,000. Non-running: $1,000. I would guess $3,500. California cars generally will get more so maybe $4kish. The kiss of death is seriously rusted rockers. They are replacable but if the inners are gone the structural integrity of the car is compromised. Knock off at least $2,000 for that so you are down to $1,500 and a much harder sell.

My first car was an old '65 Mustang that I hot rodded. One day I was stopped at a light when my 35 year old step-brother pulled up in his Firebird 400. He smoked me so bad I had to get rid of the Mustang. Your picture brought up bad memories: How could a 16 year old loose to an "old man"??

Good luck with the GTV - they are a blast.

Looks nice Marty. I'll look forward to seeing the new one back in shape. I appreciate a well put together car but I must admit I really do enjoy something that has the ability to fry the rubber until they go up in smoke. I do wish I got your gas mileage though.
