Actually, it's the other way around Frank. The 74 used a glued in windshield. The early cars used a molded-in version. The glued ones are better...honest.

Cheers,

Alex is right. I am not sure about '70 - '71 but '72 to '74 model GTV comes with glued on windshields. And yes, the glued on windshield is better.

Yep. Alfa switched to the glue in windshield when the 2l came out in 1972. It's a somewhat popular mod to retrofit the gasket type into the later cars. But it's not cheap. You will need the gasket, the trim AND a new windshield. The gasketed type windshields are slightly smaller than the glue ins. All the pieces are available from www.reoriginals.com

I've heard that the gasketed type cars are less prone to rusting around the windshield because the gasket offers better resistance to water intrusion. Don't know for sure though.

Jim, I think that depends on who put the windshield in. The modern glues and processes make it a lot better seal.

windshields

You guys are both on the right track-however the big issue has to do with the trim-on the later glue-in the trim was too wide and actually rubbed the sheet metal (body) around the bottom corners and the piece covering the wiper well. This leads to rusting-the gasket type is much more serviceable but does need some extra "gooping" to be 100% H20 tight. The correct method for doing this is shown in the factory coachworks manual. All around I feel the gasket-type is better. The alloy trim is a pain. Fred.

Alfa romeo GTV windshields

Just so you know, we will have the rubber gasket type windshields in early April. I bought a cse of 25 which are half sold.
We sell over the years to the majority of parts specialists in US & Canada (most will know us under Lo-Can Glass International which we sold in 2002 after 49 years family owned)...
The glue in type windshields are being run off in a few more months from Safevue in South Africa. They are one of the biggest aftermarket suppliers of foreign car windshields in North America.
The rubber gasket type are made by Pilkington Triplex in England. Pilkington is the largest or second largest OEM glass manufacturer in the world-they fit well. Just let me know if you need one..prob here in the Boston area by second week of April.
By the way the rubber gasket type is clear, the glue in will belight green tint.
