Just had another look at the SICCA file. Or was it SICKA?

SICCA - from Auto Moto Sport July, 1950 - unaltered

Unfortunately, I have only a photocopy made at the Museo dell'Auto in Torino during one of many visits in the late 1980's or perhaps 1990-91? I should say, "Mostly unaltered" as I did not include the entire image and I added the caption information to the image.

Sandro Poli ... related to Silvano Poli ???

I should have mentioned that an internet-based telephone directory search done earlier today (paginebianche.it) turned up a Sandro Poli in the Veneto Region of Italy with ... a mechanical shop! This might infer a likely or possible connection to the Sandro Poli who might have raced in this car or another. Who wants to be the first to check it out? Chi e chi parla un po d'Italiano?

So many questions, so little time....

Wink RE: What Racecar is it?

Looks like a late '40's Nardi to me. If so, it likely has a 6C2500 motor in it with three 2bbl Webers. Nardi (the steering wheel guy) tried his hand at car construction before he went in the steering wheel biz. Most of his cars had minimalist torpedo bodies and cycle fenders similar to this one. Without more info, I can't be 100% sure but I'm sure to bet a small amount of money that I am right!

it is in "La sport" page 72..

Silvano Poli from Belluno was one of the last to use the 6c engine in a special, bodied by a company called S.i.c.c.a. and which had as we can see, certain success at the concorso in venice 1950. But in spider form 1950, it coudnt keep up with the opposition in the races. in 1951 it was changed into a coupe to compete in the less competitive Gran turismo category and had a few wins.
thats whats in la sport..

Sandro Poli & Silvano Poli

Sorry if the implications were unclear.

Silvano Poli apparently owned S.I.C.C.A. and bodied the Alfa Romeo for his own use and perhaps promotional purposes.

Sandro Poli raced an Alfa Romeo (unidentified in my notes) during 1951. It might just be the car under discussion here. I have not checked specifically.

Today, a "Silvano Poli" is listed in the telephone directory in the Veneto region but with no obvious connection to either a car business or a mechanically oriented business. The listed address is not directly linkable to the S.I.C.C.A. business locales that have been reported. Still, someone should probably call to see if there is a chance. The "Silvano" listed might just be a grandson?

Today, there are five listings for "Sandro Poli" in the Veneto Region and one is listed as "Poli Ing. Sandro Progettazione Meccanica" in Conegliano, near Treviso. This is perhaps a machine shop? Could it be that a young fellow who raced a car more than 50 years ago might have a machine shop still today? If not, might he be a relative? If not, there are four other listings to check out, one of which might lead to the private (home) listing for the same Sandro Poli as that listed above.

I have struck out many times while doing this kind of research but have also collected a lot of information in this way. It all takes time and often a fair bit of persistence. Not everyone who gets called is friendly about it but usually a bit of passion will win them over. And sometimes it is a lead to a cousin that pays off as a result. But, it can be uncomfortable to hear some variation on, "My father crashed the car into a tree and was buried right there with the car."

Best of luck to whoever follows this possibility up.
