Alan Ward

Alan R. Ward 1934-2016

Alan Ward, one of the original members
of AROSC passed away Sunday, August
30 at his home in Las Vegas at the age
of 82.

Alan was active in the Club and the
Time Trial program from the beginning.
In the 1960s he competed in
autocross with his Giulietta. In the 70s
he acquired a 105 Spider and shared a
garage with Phyllis Gaylard and her TZ
as they both were racing in SCCA. He
won the local championship and went
to the National Run-Offs in 1973-1977.
While competing, he teamed up
with race car designer Trevor Harris
(AVS Shadow, BRE Datsun 510, etc.)
to develop suspension improvements
for the Alfa. The sway bars, springs
and panhard rods they built became
the primary product line for Ward &
Deane Racing. Alan and his partner
Don Deane built and sold suspension
parts for street and competition to the
Alfa community worldwide for three
decades. They also prepared many Alfas
for club and vintage racing.

Alan was also a senior instructor for
the Alfa Club driving school in the 90s
and was a partner with Phyllis Gaylard
in a GTV which they both entered in
Club events. Alan went on to compete
in VARA vintage races for several years,
even after he retired from Hughes
Research lab and moved to Las Vegas.
Alan was a friend and mentor to
innumerable members of our Alfa
community and we will miss him.

Tina Van Curen & Phyllis Gaylard

A nice tribute to an Alfa Romeo community icon. Best wishes to his family and friends.

We used to hear people whisper and point...."That car has Ward & Deane springs." We'd all nod and say Ohhh..."

I believe I met Phyllis many years ago (late 80s?) when she attended a big Alfa & Italian show we put on in Seattle at a county park. She brought along a very purposeful GTV that sat just right. She wore a straw hat with a big wide brim. Being uneducated in the world of Alfa club racing at the time, it took us a while to figure out who she was - we then dubbed her Fast Phyllis! She was a really lovely person.

you wanted a fast car you went to see Ward & Deane. They were in a small shop on Aviation Blvd in Sepulveda, not far from LAX. I had one of his front spoilers on my GTv and it really made it a stable car in cross winds. I also had a set of his upper adjustable A arms that were more affordable than the ones you could buy from overseas. His cars were very fast and they were always looking for an edge to go faster. A wonderful man who will be missed.

I remember going to Alan's shop around 1970. He was racing a 1750 Spider in SCCA E Production. I also remember seeing the TZ, Donald's Lotus Cortina, Donald's Elan and the 550 Porsche. I used to drive my 1961 Sprint Veloce to his shop to buy parts and used his hydraulic press to rebuild my 1957 Spider tunnel case transmission. I enjoyed watching them work on the race car and customer cars. I had Donald rebuild my 1961 Sprint Veloce transmission. I even drove the 2000 Spider race car on a trailer to an Ontario Speedway SCCA race. I miss both Donald and Alan.

1.1 G's on a skidpad with a GTV. That's spectacular even by today's measures, but Alan was doing it with a 105 chassis and live rear axle. R.I.P. Alan.

I want to see as many of you as possible come out for this not only to honor Alan's great legacy but it would be fun to see some familiar faces I've missed since moving to WA state some 13 years ago. I know there is a VARA event the same weekend but come on, there's going to be plenty of those going forward so don't let that keep you from showing up.

Alfas will race

Alfas at Willow Springs - Feb 18-19

Well "if you schedule it, they will come". Here is the entry list of Alfas as of today and there are 4 or 5 others who will register.
It will be an honest to goodness Alfa Romeo Race Car Event. Most of these cars are proper race cars and will race at 3pm on Saturday. Enough of you wanted to do something Saturday evening so we will gather at "that Mexican place by the Rosamond AirPark" Now called El Indio. There is a back room so there will be plenty of room for us when we wander in from the track after awards.
Registration starts at AROSC-HPD Home Page
Just want to spectate then come on out to Willow Springs anyway. We will have some sort of lunch time track drive.

See you at the track.

Thanks Paul! I know of at least 3 more cars that are not on that list so it will be a great grid for sure. Look forward to seeing everyone there, Fred.
