Engine Number help required

Hello everyone,

I have a 1600 engine with a number that I cannot identify (catalogue only goes up to 1972). It is AR00536*S4002. According to my catalogue the 00536*S0001 to 100 were Coupe Zagatos- does that mean my engine came from a later one of these? If so, what differences did they have from the standard 1600 engines of the time?

many thanks for any info you can give me.

Best regards

John

Hi John

It's a stock 1600 motor, after 1972 Alfa started using letters and numbers in their sequencing, I had a 1600 engine in one of my cars with the number AR 00526*ASH186. I never could date it, excepting that it was post '72, as my copy of Fusi only goes up to '72.

00536 engines come from 1600cc Coupe's - GT Juniors, etc

00526 engines come from 1600cc Giulia Supers

Ciao
Greig

I don't know if it's related, but some time during 1972, Alfa introduced an "emissions reduced" Montreal engine in a.o. Germany, and added an S to those engine numbers. It's tempting to think Alfa codified engine attributes into the numbers, but I have no documentation to support that.

My Montreal (built in '72) engine is AR00564*S0527*, whereas earlier engines lacks the 'S' and are numbered AR00564*NNNN*.

Thanks guys, it makes sense that it is a standard GT Jnr engine.

TorW has it right. The 'S' designates that the engine is either an emcon engine (emission control) or a standardized (for emission control) engine. A standardized engine differs from an emcon engine only in having no emission control carbs.
The 1600cc 00536 'S' engines differ from the non-S engines in having different distributors, ignition timing specs, front pulleys and the exhaust cam advanced from 102 degrees to 111 degrees. The emcon engines also have different carbs and jetting. These engines are also marked with the letter 'D', 'E' or 'G' on the front of the cylinder head.

Thanks Jim. I assume these emission controls had an effect on the power output of the engine?
