Looking for information on Australian spec 105 gt's & 1750 GTV

hello,

I am interested in buying an alpha and I have been looking at Unique Cars dot com. The two models I have been looking at are the 1750 GT Veloce and the slighlty newer 105 GT's. I have a few question for anybody that has got time:

Are these basically the same cars, the latter with a 2L and a few tweaks know doubt?

Are there any threads I should read before buying one of these cars?

Are parts expensive in Australia?

Are there any owners clubs in Oz?

Thanks
Mark

Hey Mark, which city are you in?
THere are plenty of alfa clubs around Oz, I highly recommend talking to them first as they will probably know the cars you are going to look at
http://www.aroca-qld.com/
http://www.alfaclubvic.org.au/
http://www.alfaclubnsw.org.au/
http://www.iaaf.uwa.edu.au/smbunt/AROCAWA/index.html

There are a few threads on the differences for example
http://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/show...nces+1750+2000
http://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/show...nces+1750+2000
http://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/show...nces+1750+2000

just do search.

Oh and they are Alfas not Alphas!

Mark, go and drive both a 1750GTV and a 2000GTV, they are largely similar in many ways, but they have differing characters. The extra torque of the 2000 makes a lot of people's mind's up, but some like me - we just fall for the simpler elegance of the 1750, with its slightly nicer rear guard profile and plain grille, more "60's" classic dash and full hubcaps over the wheel nuts.

The 1750 series 1, differs slightly from the series 2 in details, and that makes it for me as well.

Then, go and find a Giulia Super. You'll love it more.

Thanks for the replies guys!

I have read some of the threads and had a good look around the site, which is great I must add! Still got a few questions about Autodelta, never really heard of them before but one of the cars I'm looking at claims to have $15000 worth of Autodelta 'type' modifications etc. Is this good, I'm guessing so but the car is going for $8k....
Is 8/10k the right price for this sort of car or should I expect to pay a lot more for a good one? (1971 series2 1750, bodywork looks good as does the interior)
Oh yeh I'm in NSW
Cheers
M

Hey Mark, that's a white car right?

Autodelta was the factory racing department of Alfa Romeo, and it was established in the late fifties I think - Ing. Carlo Chiti, engineer / extraoridinaire was at the helm. The lion's share of Autodelta's work went into the GTA and GTAm, the lighweight race versions of Alfa's Bertone Coupes.

The white 1750 Serie 2 that you're looking at may benefit from having a host of special parts that were developed and homologated in period, and used in racing applications. You should get the vendor to list what the parts/improvements are, it could make a suitably interesting post (!) and will serve to help you make the right purchace.

The man to talk to on this panel in my opinion is Jim Neill (papajam), I believe his advice is invaluable if you run a 1750, as he knows them inside out.

If that car has got genuine Autodelta mods, and the body is in very good nick, I think $8K is a steal.

When you see that there's a serie 2 car on the Alfaholics web site for sale at GBP16000, you get the feeling that you should snap up all the cars left for sale in Australia and stash them.

Look forward to hearing more.

Smile Yes it was the white one!

But alas it has gone, not is all lost though as the owner has offered an inspection of a 1974 1600 GT Junior for the same price.
This has kind of thrown me as I was kind of doing all my homework on 1750/2000 gtv's, so back to square one....
Any views on 1600 vs 1750/2000 gt's? I could ask the guy if he wants me to forward his e-mail address but I'm not sure of the implications on this site...?
Also guessing he might have a few spare parts kicking around, any views?
M

Does the 74 1600 have a 2000GTV-style grille? Or is it the simpler single headlamp style?

There were some later 1600 Juniors in Australia that look like a 2000GTV from the outset and they came out of South Africa. I knew of a blue one here in Melbourne.

Mark, many people in the Alfa circles like the 1600 engine the most, for the way it revs. You should try it. What kind of cars have you had in the past?
