Vintage 1920s ES & G1 Alfa parts wanted

Looking for any help on locating parts for my Alfa Romeo G1 and ES Sport projects. I have two cars that I am looking to rebuild and would be very interested in talking to anyone that may have, or know of any early parts, or complete side valve motors, both the 4 cylinder 4.25 ltr side valve motor and the 6 cylinder 6.4 ltr side valve motor. Any help would be most appreciated.

I haven't seen any G1 parts for sale in my 35 years of Alfa involvement, and only 2 or 3 ES cars that were fairly complete for sale. I think you will have to make most of what you need from factory blueprints, and I'm not sure how much still exists in Alfa's archive.

Vintage G1 & ES parts wanted

Thankyou for the reply. You are correct in stating that very little has come up for sale over the years, but it has been my experience that most people do not asscoicate the Merosi side valve powered cars with Alfa Romeo and that there are still some parts to be found, albeit with great difficulty. There has not been much research or disussion in recent times on the early Merosi Alfas and I am hoping that renewed discussion and interest, may drag out some relics that may have otherwise been completely lost in time. I have been working closely with Alfa Romeo Arese and am currently waiting on a shipment of blueprints that they have kindly dug out for me to assist with the restoration. However, I am still hoping to be able to use original parts for the majority of the rebuild if possible. Any help or information that may assist in tracking parts would obviously be most appreciated. Thankyou Damian

My understanding is that, except for a couple of prototypes, the whole batch of G1s has been sold to Australia. That's also the place where the only surviving running car has been found and restored. I have no direct connections in Australia, at least not into vintage cars, but I would suggest you follow as much as possible australian connections.

Of course you have to contact the owner of the running G1, he and the owner of the shop taht did the job being possibly the only persons to know of patterns for remanufacturing the missing parts.

I don't know if you got any useful reply from the Alfa museum, but as far as searching for info, you should also try to contact Mrs. Biffignandi at the Turin' Biscaretti museum to have access to the file on Merosi Alfas.

Good luck with a historically important yet very demanding project!

G1 and ES Sport parts wanted

Thankyou for taking the time to post a reply. I have already been in contact with the past owners of G1 #6018 and obtained as much information as possible, some of which Fusi had originally provided back in the 1960s, and has never been published. I also travelled to Italy at the beginning of this year and spent a number of days in the archives at both the Biscaretti in Torino and at "Museo Storico", Alfa Romeo Arese ,which proved to quite fruitful. I am continually in correspondence with Arese and they are being extremely helpful and blueprints of the missing parts have already been organised from the Merosi files. Essentially, I am in a position to begin a restoration, but I still feel that more research needs to be done in order to develop a better picture of my G1 Sport(short chassis corsa) prototype, and in particular how it was set up. I am also hoping to use as many original parts as possible once the research is completed. The G1 Sport(short chassis) was a car that had not previously been documented and it has taken me 7 years to legitimately establish its existence which has partly been done with the discovery of original G1 brochures from the UK, Australia and Italy. I found the Italian G1 brochure showing the G1 Sport being offered for sale in the archives of the Biscaretti hidden away in one of the period magazines which had not been recorded, it was only advertised for the one week in 1921. The G1 Sport Corsa I am rebuilding was an anomaly that most could not explain, but something which I felt made sense in the climate of that time where experimentation was a key. A a good deal of cars from the Merosi period have been incorrectly identified as standard production or corsa models, if one were to study a number of the photos from the early Merosi racing days closely, one would discover a number of unidentifiable, unknown or undocumented cars. I would be happy to discuss the matter in more detail and answer any questions anyone might have. Cheers Damian

A fascinating thread -- and two wonderful projects.

Please show us some pictures of your cars and tell us where and how you found them, etc.

ES Sport and G1 parts

I apologise for the delay in replying, problems with my server and I was out of action for 5 days, all is now resolved. Essentially I had been researching an unusual G1 that was runoured to have existed for over 7 years and I was able to track the history of two G1 cars and work backwards. Unfortunately I do not have an ES Sport motor but am chasing a few solid leads, but I do have the foundations of a car we believe was running an ES Sport motor. I also have enough to rebuild a G1 motor being engine no. 6031 and the remains of G1 car no.6012. When I set everything up, I will orgnaise some photos and definnitely post them before any restoration is begun.

This could very well be the best restoration project to hit the Alfa BB. Thanks for sharing with us. There are a ton of knowledgable people on this site who can help. Where are you located?

Another suggestion: Angelo Tito Anselmi is in charge of Merosi's family archive. Some original material has already been used to move forward the research on ALFA. If you didn't yet get contact with Anselmi, you should do so.

I can provide a contact address if you need it, but I prefer to pass personal data offline.

Damianjc,

While I'm waaay out of my league on this subject, I offer the following:

There was a G1 restored here in Australia by an Airforce engineer by the name of Ross Flewell-Smith. I thought the car was now in the hands of a dealership in Queensland Australia, possibly John French.

I don't have contact details for Ross, but the French dealership is in Woolloongabba, Brisbane, Australia Ph:61 7 3391 6055

I also found this on google so the car may now be in NZ.

Another source of info may be David Wright. He is a motoring writer, author and has written a couple of small books on Alfa in Australia.

He may be contactable through:
Marque Publishing Company Pty Ltd
911 King Georges Road
Blakehurst NSW 2221
Australia

Good luck
