Alfa 412 Vignale

Bill Noon of Symbolic Motors in La Jolla just found a Vignale coachbuilder factory "magazine" I have never even heard of, much less seen before!

It shows one of the Tipo 412 sports after it was rebodied by Vignale in 1950s or 1951. The car raced in the 1951 Mille Miglia, but there the body was bare metal!

It appears in the photo that the car was either red with a black center section, red with a blue center section, or red with a "blood" red center section; similar to the paint schemes on the 1939-1940 6c2500/Tipo 256 Ala Spessas! I have never seen this photo before.

Anyone know anything about it, or even about this obviously very rare Vignale "factory" publication?

Link to the page in the magazine with the 412 photo:

Thanks,
Stu

What is strange is that it appears the car was painted, then the headrest was added and the paint was removed. I'm not sure of the date the original coachwork was removed and replaced with the Vignale coachwork, but it had to be prior to the Mille Miglia in 1951.

The Italian Mille Miglia site is incorrect, as the car had a 4.5 liter 12c37 motor, and not a 12c36 4.1 liter motor.

The top 2 pictures on the Italian Alfa spider link are from Road and Track magazine.

Here is a link to a photo of what the original coachwork looked like on both cars.

... and unless it's fallen into the hands of a collector, it probably has a b@$tard engine under the hood.

In doing a Google image search, a number of toy model companies have produced a scale version of this car.

Here is a link to a photo of Tipo 412 chassis 412038 engine 412152 (the car is now renumbered 412152; the same as the motor) as it exists in the "Schlumpf" collection. I believe this coachwork was done in Belgium in the early 1950s. Prior to the rebody, it was raced by Daetwyler in Switzerland with the original style body, in red, with a white hood. Brumm makes a model of the Daetwyler car, and there are a number of models of the car in all red, plus a few models of the car with the Vignale rebody. As far as I am aware, no model exists of the car with the coachwork as now in "Schlumpf"

I do have both in 1/43, but didn't know they were actually the same car.
I have the stradale version of the Vignale, not the MM version (yet)
