Interesting Alfa patent
Not an airbag, but headed in that direction. This patent was filed in 1974:
Inflatable head protector - Google Patents
It's amazing how many patents they filed in the US. Try entering "Alfa Romeo" into the Google Patent Search site...bunches and bunches are returned.

Many thanks for the link to Google Patents, I wasn't aware of this service, but it's very interesting and helpful!
In some cases it is even more useful to learn what patents were NOT registered for Alfa Romeo.
My search confirmed that the patent for the Alfa Romeo Disco Volante was registered under the name Gioacchimo Colombo and NOT under Alfa Romeo or Carrozzeria Touring.
COLOMBO AUTOMOBILE - Google Patents
Here is the thread where we touched this topic 6C3000 CM
Best regards
Ciao Carlo

Great find, Carlo. But I'm not sure about your conclusions. My understanding is that INDIVIDUALS have to apply for patents, possibly on behalf of, or for their affiliation to a company. The other, newer patents whose links were posted above, all carry the name of Alfa employees, some of which well known, such as Surace or Garcea, but the patent form show both their names and that of the company. The Disco patent being older, the form is simpler, so it doesn't show as obviously that Colombo is here applying in Alfa's name, as actually indicated, even if in a not-too-clear way, under the title on page 2. At least, that's how I understand it.

Don Black wrote an article regarding a number Alfa Romeo patents, which was published in the May issue of Alfa Giornale (AROC-Detroit monthly newsletter).
He mentioned that the adjustable air dam was dropped from the model it was intended for because when lowered it could cause overheating. Good idea, wrong application.

Well the lowering spoiler did find it's way on the Alfa90 in 1984. That actually looks like the 80's Giulietta front.

I agree. Many of the 80's sedan designs looked very similar.
In the U.S., from 1980 through 1990, Alfa officially offered three cars: GTV-6, Milano/75, and the Spider. (Correct me if I'm wrong.)
How did the spoiler work out on the 90?

This is kinda cool, a predecessor to the airbag I am sure. An arresting net kinda of like before tail hooks on aircraft carriers.
