The car is in the Denver area and owned by the proprietor of Alfa West, a well known Alfa shop. The owner actually posts on this BB from time to time.

Here is a photo of the car from a show a few years ago.

As per a recent e-mail conversation, the owner of Alfa West still has the Graduate car.

alfa duetto

Hi Steve. I saw your posting and was blown away to see your dad's car, which may have been my dad's car. They appear to be the same car and the story line makes sense. My dad, Glen Shepard, always said his car belonged to Bob Griffith or Lee Midgley and was once on the pole at Riverside. I recently saw a racing movie by Paul Newman and both cars were in it. My dad had some success with the car. He qualified for the Runoffs at Road Atalnta in the early 1970's and won a few races in the scca Midwest division. He eventually sold the car and bought a C Sports Racer. I've always dreamed of finding that car and racing it in vintage racing. I'll send some pictures.

hey Steve. cool to hear from you. my dad heard that the Alfa he drove had made it's way up to the Portland, OR area. I've done some internet poking around and saw this car and was thinking maybe it was the one. It has the same style rollbar my dad put in the car and the side pipe under the driver side door is the same. I tried contacting the owner but had no luck. are these alfa owners uninterested in the history of their cars? anyhow, i sure would like to solve the mystery and find the right cars. it's pretty cool how these two Duettos made such an impact on the three sons of the drivers. i know my dad loved that car and so did I. let me know what you and your dad think of these pictures.

Sorry that I did not respond to email about my Alfa. I purchased Lee Midgley's car from Lee( Foreign Car Service) on June 13,1969. I took it back to San Jose,CA and raced it the next weekend. Third place first time out at a Trans-Am weekend. Basically a national field. I raced it from then untill 1987, with many National SCCA wins and lap records. It has never sat outside, except when I worked for Ron Neal at Prototype Engineering in Wheeling, IL. in early 1977. The premier Alfa shop at the time and my car was outside. The car is not for sale. It currently is apart and am rebuilding the 1750 engine. The car was dipped and completly rebuilt with a chrome moly cage. Kevlar hood and decklid. Panhard rod rear suspension. When time and space permit, I will get some digital pics and post. Car was on cover of Alfa Owner after 2000 convention in Portland. I have owned this car for over 40 years now and it has always been a very fast, reliable race car. Supposedly one of "The Graduate " cars. Karen Dale Macgowan owner Alfa West Lakewood,CO.

I could be wrong, but I would think the car is in this picture that Karen has posted on the Giulietta register pages. I enjoyed the pictures as the giulietta has the chassis number prior to my car...hence I remembered the red duetto on it.

regards,

Jelle

As soon as I can get some of the other Alfa's out of the way, I will post current pics of the #8 EP Duetto and " The Black Car" 750 Giulietta Spider Veloce with 1750 GTA engine, etc. Six Alfa's in a 2 car garage makes it difficult to do much of anything with any of them. Hey, I was there

Steve, I know a little about your dads Alfa. My name is Don Brock and that's me sitting next to your dad, holding the checkered flag,in the photo. I hung around Foreign Car Service in Riverside so long that Bob and Lee gave me a job. I "worked" ,mostly polished, the TR2 (with a TR3 front end) and went to my first race in Las Vegas with Bob, Lee and Chuck. Later Alfa gave them two Spyders, my job was to scrape out the undercoating and sound proofing, the messyest thing I've ever done. I preped the cars, took the engines to Van Nuys to John Shankle, did all the running around to Alfa in El Segundo for parts and towed the car all over (while Bob and Lee mostly flew). I was about 18 or 19 at the time and did this untill I was drafted. I had the best time a kid could have, met the most interesting people and saw alot of U.S.
As for your dad and Lee, I learned everything from them. About life and it's posibilities, about Jazz, about just know the difference between being and living. I wish I could relate more car details, I do remember alot and that was 43 years ago, but I would not know where to start. But I will tell you, your father was a good man, maybe the best I ever met.
Don
