The early 1996 model years got a door jam plate saying that the car meet all US specs. Just like the earlier cars have. Fiat did all the crash and emissions testing on the cars for 1996 model year for importing. But then they pulled out in typical Fiat fashion. If it has the plate it will have the vin number that meets US requirements.
The vin number also has to be in the local & federal database. A Euro MB 500SEC that I had was federalized and had the DOT work done when it was imported here, with all the right paperwork, however, the vin was european, so it was difficult to actually get the right model on the title and also on the insurance.
But if this already has a US vin it looks like a pretty good deal.
Hi there,
This is my car and it does indeed have US style VIN plate with 17 digit number, which works with Carfax and Autocheck, except it brings it up as Fiat - Alfa Romeo.
Car was sold new in Japan and imported through Canada in early 2015. I do have valid Ohio title and normal plates, nothing special about it.
Thanks
Michael
I will also mention something most people might not know. Alfa designed the spider first with all the bracing needed for a convertible. For the GTV they added a roof to the spider. So the GTV is about 60 pounds more then the spider. But it is a car that has very little flex because of the convertible bracing and the roof.
Car does have double floor panels in the front and very tall rocker panels. Sheet metal is galvanized, which is strange for the usual Fiat-ish cheap build quality. Not sure how to measure flex, but handling is sharp, very much like gokart.
Cool car probably one of a very few in US. Congrats to seller and buyer
