I did drop a note yesterday, but got no response. And I'm sure other Board members who have posted on this thread probably have too, but the price is still unknown. The car is on the market, but not the price. Strange way to sell a car.
Yes, it's up to him, but when a seller is this secretive about the price, it gives the impression (at least to me) that the seller is embarrased or afraid that the asking price will scare off any buyers or not be well perceived or accepted by others, and that is suspicious (again, at least to me). Not a good way to sell a car, IMHO

Maybe, but I suspect that he will get his price, or near it in relatively short order. I think there a few folks who would drop 15-16k easy on a perfect, like new 164S. Time will tell.

Bruth,

Well, you're off to a great start.

You use your first two posts on this BB to disparage my friend and fellow Alfisti in his own thread.

Perhaps you'd want to reconsider your tactics: do you really think badmouthing the seller will create for you, a prospective buyer, some negotiating advantage?

Strange way to buy a car.

But wait. You're not really a prospective buyer, now are you?

On the other hand, maybe badmouthing a seller in public will will get your private email answered sooner. Hmmm. I'll need to think on that one...

Give us all a break.

Chuck

I am not disparaging the seller at all nor, unlike you, trying to assist him. But I do think a buyer needs to know what a seller wants for something that is for sale. Therefore I am not trying to gain any negotiating advantage at all.

But in order to buy a car, one needs to know, maybe not the seller's internal bottom line, but at least the asking price as a starting point. I do not consider this a "tactic" designed to obtain a "negotiating advantage"? Nor do I believe that a buyer needs to struggle to ascertain the asking price. That should be transparent.

And if I was not a "prospective buyer", why would I have tried to ascertain the asking price?

But now, I'm not so sure that I want to know the price or that I am a prospective buyer.

Just out of curiosity, when you sold the car, did you not list or disclose your asking price when asked?

I see nothing wrong with asking for an asking price to be posted... I actually think it should be a requirement in the for sale section.

Looks like a great car. Good luck with the sale.

Everyone,

My apologies for the slow response...I've been traveling for work for the past two weeks and haven't been able to get back to this BB. That's why I asked people to email me at pjphughes@yahoo.com as I can get those emails immediately on my iPhone when on the road. I've responded to everyone who emailed me.

I'd prefer to deal with people directly via email, if that's ok with everyone. It's more personal, I can strike up a "conversation" and it just makes more sense to me.

To be completely honest with people (and I've been completely honest about the car), I've got a lot of money invested in the initial purchase of the car, as well as refurbishments. I'm not looking to end up too much in the hole on this one (although I know I already will based on the way I tend to buy cars, fix them up, enjoy them, and then stupidly sell them off!

I'm offering the car for $13.5K firm.

I bought it for more, and have invested a lot of money in to it. But priorities change....Whoever buys it is getting one hell of a deal!!! You won't find a better running or looking 164 S out there. The paint and leather on the car are virtually flawless as you can see in the pictures.

Sorry for the cagey-ness initially. I didn't realize it would create such a stink!

Hey Paul,

It sounds like you have a fine(perhaps the finest, now for sale) example of the 164S. In a way, I'm just as curious about the price as everyone else; and if there was a stipulation to post one, you'd be compelled to-but there isn't, so you're not.

In my experience, if I'm interested and not just curious, I'll make contact privately & conduct business out of the public view. Those who want prices posted are justifiably curious; we're all car guys after all, and the market is important to us. But I've observed forum members(BMW, mostly) post an asking price and get the snot kicked out of them for being unwilling to offer 'something for nothing'!! So, when-not if-I decide to sell my 'stuff', I'll likely follow your paradigm.

Having stated all that, today's market is a complete distortion of what we've known, whether you're looking at real estate, stocks, fuel injectors, or steering wheels. We are in a historical time that may, in retrospect, not go down as the "Great Recession", but as the "Great Depression ll", but that's for another site. Bottom line: the BBS wheels I bought in 2007 aren't likely to bring the same nominal price back to me in 2010, sad to say!! It's a buyer's market right now**, but if your time horizon is flexible, maybe you can sell this Alfa without being too far "under water".

Good luck with your sale,

Dan

**as in all appreciating markets, this observation has its obvious limitations**

I have been lurking here for a while and finally registered.

This is a sweet car but it is a really high price for even the best 1991 164s in the world.

Lately, it seems that 164's have become "just a used car." The prices have seemed to drop to about $7500+ for even the very finest ones. The economy has not helped either. The additional problem is that as nice as this car is, with not much more use it will be just another old car with over 100k miles on it and owner will be lucky to recoup 1/4 of that price.

Just for perspective, I picked up my mint '95 164Q with half the miles for only $1,000 more that seller is asking for this '91 S. The Q series are much more prized by collectors which is why they can break the 5 figure mark.

Best of luck with the sale. Unless you really need to sell, and will not be adding a lot of miles, I would keep her for now. Ten years from now may be an entirely different market.

dear toomanyalfas, i disagree. t]This a beautiful car at an attractive price, of course if there was a mint Q at a lower price it would sell very quickly -- but I have not seen many of those for 12.5k, has anyone else?

Though obviously not the Q4, which brings more money, I have seen nice Q's in this price range. And I've also seen very nice LS's for less than this car. But I'm sure the economy has a lot to do with the depressed prices for these nice cars, though.

After two unanswered emails and two unanswered PM's I assume that either this one is sold or there is no sincere interest in selling?

I just drove a 2004 CTS-V this weekend. Not usually a fan of Yank cars but WOW! 400HP makes the 164 feel anemic. Nice, low-mileage examples are selling for a lot less than some of the crazy prices on the clean 164s and ownership costs are much lower. Never thought I would say this but I may be buying a Cadillac.
